Reshaping International Operations for Carbon Neutrality in Turbulent Times

Climate change and carbon neutrality are global issues. The climate change brought about by the greenhouse effect is seriously threatening the future survival of mankind. For that reason, achieving carbon neutrality is an important goal in building a global community with shared hopes for the future of mankind and for achieving global sustainable development. As countries around the world pay more attention to global climate change, a series of carbon emission plans involving concepts such as “carbon peak” and “carbon neutrality” have been gradually implemented to achieve the UN agenda 2030 with its 17 sustainable development goals.
At the UN General Assembly in September of 2020, world leaders made public commitments to climate action and carbon neutralization initiatives. For instance, Finland made a commitment to achieve carbon neutralization by 2035, and Sweden and Germany by 2045. China promised the world that it would achieve its carbon peak by 2030 and carbon neutralization by 2060. In July of 2021, China officially launched the carbon trading market to guide enterprises' strategies for realizing carbon neutralization. Other world leaders have also made public commitments to that goal. In other major developed countries, such as Britain, and the European Union, laws have officially stipulated that carbon neutrality will be achieved by 2050. Canada, the United States, and Japan have also promulgated relevant policies to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. Among developing countries, Brazil and Thailand aim to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, while India has set a 2070 target.
Carbon neutralization initiatives have appeared on institutional agendas worldwide and brought fundamental changes to the institutional environment, which in turn influence the international operations of global enterprises. At the same time, in today's turbulent world, disastrous events such as the global pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine war have caused great uncertainties and challenges in global supply chains, especially those in global energy, food supply, and security industries. These changes will have major implications for climate change and sustainable economic development.
To realize carbon neutrality in turbulent times, companies face both new opportunities and challenges in the global arena. On the one hand, political and economic changes combined with the emergence of new technologies have aggravated the turbulence in the global business environment. On the other hand, the huge global “green economy” and demand in the green low-carbon market will drive world economic growth. At the same time, they will create great opportunities for foreign investments in different countries that will help companies to realize green transformation.
Achieving the goal of carbon neutrality will not only require companies to work with their stakeholders, but also the cooperation of all companies around the world. To achieve this goal, companies will need to reshape their international operations. This need for restructuring raises a series of issues and questions for both academics and practitioners. For example, what practices in international operations have been adopted by companies to achieve carbon neutrality? How should companies reshape their global operations to align their goals with carbon neutrality targets and UN SDG goals? How should they cope with new regulations regarding carbon neutrality in host and home countries? What are the various implications that must be considered as companies shift their carbon neutrality strategies in host and home countries? What are the key challenges for international operations facing companies as they strive to achieve their carbon neutrality goals? And so on.
To address these and other related challenges, East China University of Sciences and Technology and University of San Francisco, in partnership with Nottingham University Business School China, will launch their 6th International Conference on June 10, 2022 (BJ time). This conference will provide a platform at which scholars, business executives, and policymakers may share views, ideas, and insights on issues related to the conference theme. During this one-day conference, various sessions will include keynote speeches, keynote panels, executive panels, and paper panels.

迈向碳中和：重塑动荡时代的企业国际经营活动

实现碳中和是构建人类命运共同体和实现全球可持续发展的重要目标。随着世界各国对全球气候变化的逐渐重视，尤其是在当前国际形势动荡前行之时，碳中和以及一系列的绿色发展计划已经成为世界经济变革的主要考量。中国在2020年9月在联合国大会上承诺在2030年实现“碳达峰”、2060年实现“碳中和”，并于2021年7月正式启动碳交易市场来指导企业的碳中和战略。而世界各国也纷纷对“碳中和”的实现时间做出法律上（如英国和欧盟）或者政策上的承诺（如美国、日本、俄罗斯）。这势必对全球企业带来巨大冲击，并深刻影响着企业的国际经营活动。
企业实现碳中和的挑战与机遇并存。一方面，国际政治经济格局的调整和新一代技术革命的冲击，加剧了全球商业环境的动荡；另一方面，全球庞大的绿色经济体量和广阔的市场需求将带动世界经济增长，并为各国企业实现绿色转型创造巨大机会。实现碳中和目标，不仅需要企业与重要利益相关方建立共识，也有赖于全球所有公司的协作。因此，高度动荡的全球商业环境将为构建碳中和共识和开展全球协作带来挑战，亟需企业重塑国际经营活动予以应对。这就给学术界和实务界带来了一系列的问题：那么，在高度动荡的全球商业环境中，为了实现碳中和目标，企业的国际经营活动采取了哪些措施？未来企业应该如何通过实现其全球战略来实现碳中和目标？跨国公司如何应对母国和东道国的新的碳中和法规？跨国公司在母国和东道国实施碳中和战略会产生哪些影响？为实现碳中和目标，企业的国际经营活动会遇到哪些挑战？这些问题亟需得到广泛研讨并加以解答。
鉴于此，华东理工大学商学院组织管理研究所、旧金山大学中国企业管理研究所和宁波诺丁汉大学商学院将于2022年6月10日召开第六届国际会议。在为期一天的会议中，我们将提供包括主题演讲、学术及业界对话、论文宣读等在内的各种活动，为企业国际化中的碳中和绿色发展问题提供一个交流的平台。我们诚挚欢迎学者、业界领袖、创业者和政策制定者参与我们的讨论。
