Duties and Responsibilities:
The Assistant Professor (Indigenous Knowledge and Practice) is a (9 month) tenure track position focused on teaching, community engagement and research in the areas of Indigenous Knowledge and practice. Workload will include the development and teaching of multiple courses (online and in-person), course support, outreach and recruitment, curriculum development, and coordination of special projects as part of the UHWO Bachelor of Applied Science in Sustainable Community Food Systems. In addition to teaching responsibilities, the successful candidate will also engage with indigenous-led and community-based research projects providing hands-on and experiential learning opportunities for students. Successful candidates will have a well-planned research agenda in the field of Indigenous Knowledge and Natural Resources Management that supports the advancement of a healthy, equitable, resilient and sustainable food system for Hawaii.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in indigenous knowledge, indigenous food ways, indigenous science and natural resources management or related field from an accredited university; 
  • Strong track record of indigenizing science curriculum and/or programs at the post-secondary level;
  • Demonstrated research focus in Indigenous Environmental Science and its applications to food sustainable food systems and environmental science;
  • Strong track record of extramural grant writing experience;
  • Strong track record of engagement with indigenous communities in running field-based, experiential and hands-on learning courses at the post-secondary level. 
  • Evidence of experience in creating synergy between Indigenous and western scientific ways of knowing; 
  • An understanding of Hawaii, Hawaiian culture and Hawaiian ways of knowing.
  • Desired Qualifications:

  • Strong track record of indigenous food systems knowledge within Hawaii and across other indigenous communities;
  • Demonstrated excellence and innovation in teaching and mentoring at the post-secondary level;
  • Track record conducting applied research and education in indigenous natural resource management;
  • Strong track record in peer-reviewed publishing in the fields of indigenous knowledge, natural resources management, education, agroecology, food systems or related fields;
  • An understanding of and professional relationship with the Native Hawaiian community of the Leeward coast of Oahu;
  • Ability to interact effectively in a multicultural setting;
  • Experience teaching and working with highly diverse communities.
