Research Technician – Wetlands

BGSU Chemistry Department

Position Summary
The Research Technician will assist with and, at times, lead field research activities for the wetlands research project funded by a grant from the H2Ohio Wetlands Program. This will include ensuring that all of the equipment, materials, and supplies are available, ready for use, and loaded into the research vehicle, conducting all of the research activities in the field, supervising undergraduate and graduate research assistants who are participating in field research, and helping to ensure that all of our field research is conducted efficiently, accurately, and effectively according to program protocols and methods. At times, this individual will also assist with and participate in laboratory analysis of samples.

This is a temporary, part-time position but may expand to full-time if additional funding is obtained.
Essential Duties, Tasks and Responsibilities

  *   Assist with and, at times, lead field research in wetlands project sites including the following activities: Driving a University-owned van to and from field sites
  *   Loading and unloading all of the equipment, materials, and supplies needed for field research activities in the research vehicle
  *   Maintaining an inventory of research equipment, materials, and supplies and ensuring that all materials are ordered as needed to ensure a sufficient supply for all research activities.
  *   Conducting all field research activities using the approved methods and protocols for our research projects including field measurements of water quality parameters, data recording using Field Maps and ArcGIS Online, and collection of water and soil samples.
  *   Supervising undergraduate and graduate research assistants to ensure that they perform all of their field research activities safely and effectively and that their activities are coordinated to complete all field research tasks efficiently and on time.
  *   Assist with preparation of reports of research activities to grant agencies, for presentations at professional meetings, and for publication in peer-reviewed scientific journals.
  *   Changes in those during long term exposure to environmental conditions typical of northwest Ohio.
  *   Attend meetings with PI, research assistants and other project staff to determine policies and procedures and to report on day-to-day operations.
  *   Other duties necessary for achieving the research goals in this wetlands research project as assigned by the Principal Investigator.

Knowledge, Skills or Abilities

  *   Operation of field research equipment including soil corers; water sample collection devices; water quality meters for measuring pH, dissolved oxygen, electrical conductivity, temperature, and turbidity.
  *   Ability to navigate and operate in wet and dry field sites including wetlands by wading and in floating craft such as canoes, kayaks, and boats.
  *   Experience with collection and characterization of soil samples using established methods and protocols of soil science.
  *   Use of computer programs used in research including the Microsoft Office Package and ability to use MS Word to generate reports, MS Excel to analyze data, and MS PowerPoint to prepare and give scientific research presentations.

Minimum Qualifications:
A bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry, environmental science or related field is required.  The degree must be conferred at the time of application.  Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license and comply with the university’s vehicle use policy.

The following experience is required:

  *   1 or more years of research experience. Experience can come from graduate student work and counts as half time towards full time experience.
Salary
Part-time, Administrative staff position available. Administrative Grade Level 353. Salary is commensurate with education and experience.
