Current position openings are located in Fitchburg (Dane county), LaCrosse (LaCrosse county), Milwaukee (Milwaukee county), Prairie Du Chien (Crawford county), Superior (Douglas county), and Woodruff (Oneida county).
Please note that there are three Great Lakes based positions (two in Milwaukee and one in Superior) and four inland based positions included in this current recruitment.  All of these positions have the same basic responsibilities, but the application of those responsibilities is unique depending on the work location.  For example, the Great Lakes positions have responsibilities that include conducting fisheries surveys on Lake Michigan and Lake Superior using very large vessels and large sampling gear; the Mississippi River based positions (one in Prairie du Chien and one in La Crosse) work primarily on the Mississippi River and its tributaries; and the Woodruff and Fitchburg positions work primarily on inland lakes and streams

Position Summary

The Fisheries Management Technician performs a wide range of activities while serving at a paraprofessional level in support of the Senior Fisheries Biologist in assigned counties.  General duties include planning and conducting biological surveys; performing data-entry and analysis, assisting with technical and scientific report writing; planning and conducting stream and lake habitat projects; assisting with lands maintenance, acquisition and fishing access development activities; performing equipment and facilities maintenance; assisting with public information and education efforts; directing the work activities of Field Unit limited term employees; and performing other support and administrative activities as assigned.

Salary Information

Starting pay is $19.86/ hour for this position ($41,308 annually). Pay on appointment for current or former state employees is based on the State Compensation Plan. Current State employees applying as a transfer applicant will require DPM approval for a pay increase.
This position is in Pay Schedule / Range 06-14.  A 12-month probationary period may be required.

Qualifications

Required qualifications for this position include knowledge and experience in ALL of the following:

  *   Fish taxonomy/ identification, fish management and/ or fish ecology.
  *   Fish sampling techniques such as use of fyke, seine, or gill nets and/or electroshocking equipment.
  *   Collecting and organizing biological data.

Best-qualified applicants will also have the following preferred qualifications:

  *   An earned Bachelor’s degree or higher in Fisheries Biology, ichthyology, ecology, zoology, or related field.
  *   Experience leading a team to accomplish biological or ecological surveys or habitat improvement projects.
