JOB ANNOUNCEMENT POSITION: Fisheries Technicians Two 9-Month Limited Term Positions WAGES: $15.00 per hour - 1st - 4th year $16.00 per hour - 5th - 10th year $17.00 per hour - 10th year + +$1.00 per hour - Crew leaders & LTEs w/additional responsibilities CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: This is a temporary, part-time position. Dates of employment are March 7, 2022, to December 12, 2022. SUPERVISION: Reports to GLIFWC Inland & Great Lakes Fisheries Biologist or designee. DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: Assist with or lead (pending qualifications and experience) field surveys (day or night) of inland lakes, rivers, and Lake Superior in the Ceded Territories. Persons will help launch and operate boats, collect fish and biological information. Ability to travel for up to 3 consecutive weeks is required. Overnight lodging, per diem, and mileage will be paid. Must be willing to share overnight lodging accommodations with co-workers. Specific projects within each section include Inland Fisheries Creel surveys on inland lakes (spring and summer) Assist biologists with preparation of creel reports (summer) Fish and macroinvertebrate sampling in rivers and streams in WI. Locate spring and fall spawning habitats of commonly fished and harvested beings. (April, May, June, October November (a few days a week) Telemetry research on Mille Lacs Lake (June for 2 weeks, tagging may occur in spring or fall) Habitat surveys in inland lakes (summer) Assist biologists with preparation of habitat reports (summer) Walleye population estimates (April and May) Fall juvenile walleye surveys (September and October) Bass population estimates (May and June) Assist biologists with mentoring interns (summer) Great Lakes Fisheries Spring lamprey assessment (March-July) Siscowet assessment, 1 1/2 weeks and Beach seining, once every other week (July- August, following lamprey) Fall lamprey (September-October, outside of Inland electroshocking needs). Fall lake trout and whitefish assessment and telemetry studies (October-December) QUALIFICATIONS: Ability to identify gamefish and panfish. Persons will be expected to follow safety guidelines, to collect information in an efficient manner, and to record data neatly and accurately. All applicants will be considered but Indian preference will be given if all other qualifications are equal. Also, preference given to persons with previous GLIFWC employment. Minimum qualifications: High School Diploma Experience trailering boats Driver's license Insurable Physical requirements lifting >= 50 lbs, ability to work in adverse weather conditions Willingness/ability to travel out of town. Preferred qualifications: Bachelors degree and 2 years of experience or an associate degree and 4 years of experience Familiar with fish and macroinvertebrate identification and sampling techniques Word, Excel, PowerPoint Experience with R Teaching experience Mechanical experience Large (>35ft) and small boat (<35ft) driving experience Familiarity with using/deploying fisheries assessment gear (gill nets, trawls, electrofishing, etc.) Fish aging Indian preference will be applied consistent with GLIFWC policies and the federal Indian Self- Determination and Education Assistance Act (PL 93-638). EDUCATION OPPORTUNITIES On the job training with GLIFWC fisheries biologists and technicians will occur during employment. Opportunities to take coursework through an accredited college or university will be available and at the discretion of supervisors.
