Dr. Dan Hayes and Dr. Jo Latimore are soliciting applications for summer work on a project focused on testing and evaluating outreach materials for anglers and boaters to promote effective decontamination of invasive aquatic species. The position will run for approximately 16 weeks this summer at an hourly rate of $14.00. Their graduate student, Carrie Meier, will be the direct supervisor for this position.

The primary duties will be to:

  * Interview boaters and anglers to determine their current decontamination practices and their knowledge of aquatic invasive species
  * Provide outreach materials to boaters and anglers to help inform them about effective decontamination practices
  * Help construct and maintain wader cleaning stations and assist where appropriate with mobile boat wash station operations. Download data from game cameras intended to monitor wader cleaning station use
  * Data entry, video processing and other duties as assigned
This is an entry-level position, so detailed knowledge is not necessary, but preference will be given to students that have an understanding of aquatic invasive species identification and management, human survey methods and procedures, and an interest in the human dimensions of natural resource management.

This position requires the following:

  * A valid drivers’ license and eligibility to drive University-owned vehicles (see Employee Driver Certification at http://www.rmi.msu.edu/form/employeedrivercertification.html); the willingness to travel extensively within Michigan to conduct surveys. The logistics of travel will vary over the course of the summer, with the anticipation that multi-day trips away from home will occur. Lodging costs, which may include hotels, camping, or field stations will be covered while traveling, but frugality in expenses will be encouraged.

  * Willingness to work weekends and non-standard hours; hours limited to 8 hours per day but will include weekend work as well as occasional work after 5 pm. This position does offer flexibility in scheduling to accommodate events that the student may wish to participate in during the summer. After initial training, working alone in relatively secluded outdoor settings may occur.
  * A keen interest in working with people and to present a professional appearance and attitude while interacting with boaters and anglers.
  * Careful attention to details while performing data-related duties.

Please apply by sending a

  1. cover letter outlining your interest in this position and discussing your qualifications for this work and how it fits into your educational goals
