Research Scientist in Emerging Contaminants at LSSU’s Center for Freshwater Research and Education
Lake Superior State University’s Center for Freshwater Research and Education (CFRE) seeks qualified applicants for a Research Scientist position focusing on emerging contaminants in fresh waters. The successful candidate will join a growing team of research and education staff committed to building partnerships in the Great Lakes basin in a brand new, state-of-the-art facility located along the St. Marys River, Michigan (www.lssu.edu/cfre<https://urldefense.com/v3/__http:/www.lssu.edu/cfre__;!!HXCxUKc!ghbr-JnDxODesSods5wNAanjQWI1yjQGVGAjcT6MtdjYKxsS1tEXo2YCvUcsP0x6HQ$>). The Research Scientist will lead growth of CFRE’s research program in the area of emerging contaminants in the upper Great Lakes, and will provide vision and oversight of CFRE’s new water quality lab. This is a 12 month position with research (65%), administrative (25%), and outreach (10%) responsibilities. Tremendous opportunities exist for local and regional collaborations, including the upcoming US Coast Guard National Center of Expertise focusing on oil spills in fresh waters, which will be housed at CFRE by summer 2022. Additionally, being located at the nexus of three Great Lakes, at an international border, and adjacent to state, national, and tribal lands, provides unique opportunities to contribute to important research and management of the Great Lakes and their watersheds.
The position will provide a competitive salary and excellent benefits package, including retirement, medical, dental, and vision coverage. LSSU is a small, state university located in the beautiful Upper Peninsula of Michigan, surrounded by three Great Lakes and many state, provincial, and national forests and parks that provide tremendous recreational opportunities. Our location is surrounded by abundant natural resources that support a high quality of life. The new Richard and Theresa Barch CFRE building, opened in late 2021, sits on the St. Marys River, the sole outflow of Lake Superior and international boundary with Canada. The Barch CFRE building houses expanded research facilities, including an analytical lab and experimental mesocosms, along with a Great Lakes Discovery Center and discovery lab for K-12 education. The new facility is uniquely positioned to build partnerships to advance Great Lakes education, research, and community engagement in the region. Come join a passionate and growing team of scientists and educators!
Minimum Qualifications: Master’s degree in environmental science, chemistry, aquatic ecology, or a related field; at least 2 years of experience analyzing environmental contaminants and proficiency in using common analytical equipment; demonstrated potential ability to perform essential functions of the job as outlined in the position description; demonstrated effective communication, leadership, teamwork, and organizational skills.
Preferred Qualifications: Ph.D. in environmental science, chemistry, aquatic ecology, or a related field; experience supervising an analytical research or contract lab; demonstrated experience working with and supervising students; and successful record of obtaining external funding and publishing in peer-reviewed journals.
