The University of British Columbia’s Geoscience Education Research team invites applications for a Postdoctoral Fellow. We seek an outgoing and creative researcher who is motivated to respond to UBC’s Indigenous Strategic Plan’s call to action that asks students to situate their learning and disciplinary work in a context of (TRC), so that “any student should walk out of their graduating ceremony with an understanding of this past, and an appreciation of Indigenous peoples” (ISP Engagement Participant in Goal 4). As the UBC community works towards respectfully incorporating Indigenous histories, perspectives, or ways of knowing into courses and other co-curricular learning experiences, how will we know if specific efforts are making a difference? This project aims to develop and pilot a toolkit (survey and interview protocol) that instructors, graduate student supervisors, and administrators could use to assess student perceptions and articulation of the relationship between Indigenous topics (histories, contemporary perspectives, and/or ways of knowing) and their program of study.

We will support the person selected for this position in developing and piloting these new instruments with students majoring in science, as well as continued directions of study in the areas of student learning, JEDI, Indigenous-related topics, and/or institutional change models. The implications of this work are important to UBC’s Indigenous Strategic Plan, and Universities and communities across Canada, the US, and Australia. The successful candidate will work closely with project leaders Dr. Laura Lukes and Dr. Shandin Pete. The post-doc will have the opportunity to collaborate with staff from UBC’s Centre for Teaching and Learning Technology, Skylight, IRSI, and student researchers and could also work in collaboration with others in EOAS if desired.
