Wetland eDNA Technician


Detailed Position Description:  An hourly technician position is available in the labs of Dr. Kim Scribner and Dr. John Robinson in the Department of Fisheries and Wildlife at Michigan State University.  This is a temporary position for Spring and Summer 2022 and will involve field and lab work for an environmental DNA (eDNA) metabarcoding project in wetland habitats in Michigan, Indiana, and Ohio. The successful applicant will assist with metabarcoding database development (DNA extraction, sequencing from tissue samples), water sample collection and filtration in the field, eDNA extractions from filtered water samples, PCR amplification, and preparation for high-throughput sequencing. Research for this project will require some travel, including occasional overnight trips for field work in Michigan, Indiana, and Ohio.  The start date for this position on or before March 15, 2022. Work would be part-time during the remainder of the spring 2022 academic semester and full-time (up to 40 hours per week) during the summer months. Extended employment beyond the summer is possible. Desired Qualifications:  Applicants with previous experience conducting field work in wetland habitats and knowledge of Michigan herpetofauna are strongly desired.   with experience in laboratory settings including DNA extractions, PCR, and sequencing are encouraged to apply but previous experience in these areas is not necessary. Familiarity with data base management including use of Excel and with the R computing software would also be desirable.
