Research involves mist-netting to capture and tag bats, homing telemetry to locate diurnal roosts, using thermal telemetry devices, characterizing roosting habitat (vegetation plots) and locating historic bat roosts, performing roost exit counts, and deploying trail cameras to survey roosts for predators. Additional responsibilities include data processing and entry. Research will be conducted within the study areas of the Hardwood Ecosystem Experiment (http://www.heeforeststudy.org/) near Bloomington, Indiana. Work begins 18 May 2022 and is expected to end 14 August 2022 (start/end dates negotiable for excellent candidates). Required Qualifications -Applicants should be enrolled in or have completed a BA or BS in Biology, Wildlife Biology, Natural Resources or related field. -Comfortable hiking to and conducting exit counts at roosts alone at night. -Good physical condition for hiking and carrying up to 30 lbs. -Must be able to take detailed and accurate field notes and record data according to protocol. -Willing to work long, irregular hours, including weekends and nights, under varied and adverse conditions, including rugged terrain and dense brush where exposure to poison ivy and insects are inevitable. -Must possess a valid driver's license. -GPS, map reading, and orienteering skills. - A good attitude, a sense of humor, and the ability to live and work well with others. Preferred Qualifications -Experience with radio-telemetry -Because mist-netting is a large component of this project, candidates with rabies pre-exposure vaccinations will be given preference. All candidates wishing to handle bats are required to obtain rabies pre-exposure vaccinations or provide a recent titer check (from last 2 years). -Familiarity with Midwestern tree identification.
