Seasonal Fisheries Position

Position: State Worker position located at the Michigan DNR’s Alpena Fisheries Research Station, 160 E Fletcher, Alpena, MI 49707. This is a temporary, non-career position.

Wage: State worker hourly pay rates are $12.00 for first-time workers or those with less than 400 hours of previous MDNR experience; $12.86 with 400+ hours of MDNR experience in 2020, and $13.72 with 400+ hours of MDNR experience in each of 2020 and 2021.

Duration:  The preferred start date is April 4, 2022.  Applicants who are available to begin work by May 9 will be given consideration.  Hours per week are variable due to the nature of fieldwork and vessel cruise schedules; some weeks will be scheduled for 40 hours of work but others less.  The appointment will not extend beyond September 30, 2022.  Preference will be given to applicants who are able to work the entire term.

Duties: Principal duties are to assist station personnel with field sampling for vessel-based fisheries assessment surveys using gillnets, trawls, hydroacoustics, and underwater video.  The successful candidate will also assist with facility maintenance, net mending and construction, computer data entry, and some general laboratory work.  The candidate will learn field skills related to fish collections and use organizational, data management, and interpersonal skills.  Other duties may be assigned.  The position will be stationed at the Alpena Fisheries Research Station.  Some traveling to field sites will be required, and transportation will be provided for such travel. Qualifications: Required knowledge, skills, and abilities: Applicants should be punctual, self-starting, highly-motivated individuals interested in performing entry level maritime and fisheries-related field and lab work that sometimes involves strenuous physical labor. The candidate must be able to lift moderately heavy objects (up to 50 lbs), work outdoors, and work on various vessels in all types of weather and sea conditions.  The candidate will typically be working as part of a team but may work independently.  Ability to identify common Great Lakes fish species is preferred.  The work schedule will include various shifts and rarely weekends.  Reimbursement for travel expenses will be provided for any out-of-area travel.  Civil Service rules require all State Workers to submit to and pass a pre-employment drug test and background check.
