Description:

The Department of Fisheries and Wildlife at Michigan State University seeks 4 field technicians to assist in a study designed to evaluate white-tailed deer demographics in central Michigan. This study is evaluating changes in abundance and sex/age composition of deer in areas with varying deer harvest regulations.



Research technicians will be responsible for interacting with Michigan landowners to gain access to private property, traveling to field sites across mid-Michigan, placing and maintaining trail cameras, evaluating photos, and keeping detailed records.



These full-time (40 hours/week), temporary positions will provide technicians with the opportunity to interact with Michigan DNR employees, stakeholder groups, and local residents. Start date is flexible (between early- to mid-June 2022) and work will continue through mid- to late-September 2022. Hourly wage is $15/hour. A field vehicle will be supplied for transportation to and from the study area. Work hours are variable (longer fieldwork days balanced with shorter non-fieldwork days within the work week; no weekends required). Physical demands of this position include lifting, carrying, pushing/pulling and climbing.



Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications: A Bachelor’s degree in wildlife biology, ecology, or a related field.



Desired Qualifications: Applicants should be self-motivated, detail-oriented, open to various viewpoints on deer management, and capable of working in a team setting. Preference will be given to candidates who have experience working with trail cameras, experience working with the public, experience working with deer, and/or experience working at a state or federal agency. Technicians will be expected to work outdoors, use computer screens for extended periods of time, and follow protocols in accordance with state and university COVID-19 guidelines. Technicians must possess a valid driver’s license and have a good driving record.
