Dear colleagues,

You may have seen the recent request for geoscience education research (GER) community feedback on ICON processes. The geosciences span a wide range of disciplines (e.g. atmospheric science, geology, oceanography, physical geography) that may have different needs.

In response to the community conversations that emerged from the ICON initiative and the recent GSA Today commentary, as active geoscience education researchers who co-led a community needs assessment in 2014 (Lukes et al., 2015), we’d like to learn more about the current professional development needs and perspectives of GER community members regarding the vision for the future of GER in order to help inform future community-driven efforts.

Please note: The purpose of this survey is for “needs assessment” of the geoscience education research community only. This includes collecting anonymous survey data and reporting a summary of the anonymous results back to the community (e.g., commentary, presentation(s) at community workshop events). This is not a research project and the results are not intended to be presented as research.  As such, “according to Article 2.5 of TCPS2, Canadian policy framework governing research ethics, QA/QI activities do not require institutional research ethics review.” The University of South Carolina’s IRB also determined this survey did not require IRB review.

All members of the geoscience community interested in education research are invited to participate in this 10-15 minute survey.

Please forward this e-mail to anyone you believe would be interested, and apologies for cross-posting!

Sincerely,

Laura Lukes, Katherine Ryker, Kim Cheek, Nicole LaDue, Peggy McNeal & Kristen St. John
