The PhD project will focus on the management of inclusion/exclusion challenges and multicultural hybrid teams (virtual, physical, conceptual space, and solutions) in the context of new patterns of global mobility and forms of global work arrangements within multinational enterprises. The focus of the project may include, but are not limited to, the following areas:

 

§  Hybrid teams e.g. teams that work both physically and virtually

§  Focus on positive aspects of online environment in relation to negative biases towards culturally and linguistically dissimilar cultural Others

§  Moving beyond investigating the role of culture solely based on ‘differences’, ‘values’ and ‘distances’

§  Intercultural challenges and the role of culture in the contexts of hybrid teams

§  Focus on online support and online HRM systems in relation to international employees and different types of expatriates as well as various forms of global work arrangements

§  How to manage hybrid teams in the international workplace (e.g. MNEs) where power balance and managerial authority vary across intra-organisational units and levels and countries/regions

§  The inclusion of minority group members by use of virtual means e.g. how specific groups deal with the virtual environment and how they are integrated and involved in relation to task collaboration and the social environment

§  New understanding of the relationships and boundaries between virtual, online and physical space

 

We welcome in particular proposals that emphasise interdisciplinary investigations and that incorporate intercultural/cross-cultural management aspects. We are looking for rigorous candidates who aspire to conduct meaningful and novel research, to push the frontiers of knowledge – and those who are motivated to publish in high-impact journals (e.g. FT 50, ABS 4*, 4 and 3*, among others including relevant practitioner outlets) and to engage with practitioners and corporate policy. We highly encourage international collaboration and activities, such as fieldwork and visitingship overseas.

 

Application deadline: 31 January 2022

Annual salary: NOK 491,200 (approx. USD 54,000 / €48,000)

Commencing: 1 August 2022

Co-Supervisor (External): Professor Jakob Lauring (PhD, MA [Aarhus]) – Aarhus University School of Business and Social Sciences

Location: USN’s Campus Drammen (Norway), situated in the city of Drammen, an approximate 30-minute train ride south of Oslo (capital)

 

The successful candidate will become part of a highly international PhD community as well as a research group and a growing research community in addition to comprehensive research training. Designated office-space will be allocated and research/conference funding is available (not unlimited). The appointment is for a term of four years with 25% workload consisting of teaching obligations and/or administrative tasks.
