USDA Introduces New Insurance Policy for Farmers Who Sell Locally

WASHINGTON, Oct 6, 2021 – The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is rolling out a new insurance option specifically for agricultural producers with small farms who sell locally. The new Micro Farm policy simplifies record keeping and covers post-production costs like washing and value-added products.
USDA’s Risk Management Agency (RMA) created this new policy based on research directed by the 2018 Farm Bill, and it includes feedback from producers who grow for their local communities. The policy will be available beginning with the 2022 crop year.
“We are excited to offer this new coverage for producers who work to provide their communities with fresh and healthy food,” said RMA Acting Administrator Richard Flournoy. “USDA is focused on supporting local and regional food systems, and this new crop insurance policy is designed with this important sector of agriculture in mind.”
The new policy is offered through Whole-Farm Revenue Protection (WFRP) and it has distinct provisions that can provide more access to the program, including:
* No expense or individual commodity reporting needed, simplifying the recordkeeping requirements for producers
* Revenue from post-production costs, such as washing and packaging commodities and value-added products, are considered allowable revenue

Beginning/Intermediate Farmer Training

We would like to share an exciting opportunity for undergraduate students in summer 2022. Undergraduate students from across the North Central Region can apply to participate in this program that will take place at universities across the upper Midwest.
While the internships will range in location, topic, and format, they each will provide students with broader perspectives and experience in water-related research and extension education. Students will gain real world experience with the complexities and trade-offs associated with water-related decisions in rural and urban landscapes.
Seven students will be selected for the internship and placed at a university across the region. Internships are paid and full time over the summer. Students will be paid $15/hour in addition to up to $1,000 reimbursement for travel to the program site and a stipend of roughly $3,420 for subsistence support. (Please note, compensation may vary slightly state by state.)
In addition to activities and products at their host institution in conjunction with their mentor, students will also be part of a virtual cohort that will work together across the region to address a regional watershed management issue. As part of the virtual cohort, students will also engage in skills training throughout the summer and attend and participate in an in-person student learning summit near the end of their internship.
Any degree seeking student is eligible that has completed at least one year of higher education before starting the internship program. NCR-SARE Announces 2022 Farmer Rancher Grant Call for Proposals
The 2022 North Central Region - Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education Program (NCR-SARE) Farmer Rancher Grant Call for Proposals is now open.
Farmers and ranchers in the North Central region are invited to submit grant proposals to explore sustainable agriculture solutions to problems on the farm or ranch. Sustainable agriculture is good for the environment, profitable, and socially responsible. Proposals should show how farmers and ranchers plan to use their own innovative ideas to explore sustainable agriculture options and how they will share project results.
Farmer Rancher grants are for ideas initiated by farmers and ranchers and are offered as individual grants ($15,000 maximum) or team grants for two or more farmers/ranchers who are working together ($30,000 maximum). NCR-SARE expects to fund about 40 projects in the twelve-state North Central Region with this call. A total of approximately $720,000 is available for this program.
NCR-SARE will be accepting online submissions for the Farmer Rancher Grant Program. More information about the online submission system can be found in the call for proposals.
