The Executive Board of the Academy of International Business (AIB) is seeking an Editor-in-Chief (EIC) for the Journal of International Business Studies (JIBS). The successful candidate will be a scholar with an established profile and strong reputation in the field of International Business. The new EIC will start processing new manuscripts on July 1, 2022, and be fully responsible for all editorial activities starting January 1, 2023. The official term for the next EIC is January 1, 2023, to December 31, 2025, following the current EIC Alain Verbeke’s second term (2020-2022).

The selection of the EIC consists of a two-stage process. The AIB Board requests nominations (including self-nominations) by September 30, 2021, along with a biography (or vita) of the prospective EIC. The AIB Board will select and inform the finalists by mid-October, 2021, and will request the submission of full proposals by mid-November, 2021. The selection of the EIC will be made by January 1, 2022, to allow for a six-month editorial team preparation period.

As EIC of JIBS, the AIB’s flagship publication, the successful candidate has a major influence on the journal’s standing in the international academic community and the global impact of the AIB.  In line with the AIB’s mission, vision, and values, the EIC is responsible for ensuring that JIBS remains open to the full diversity of scholars and scholarship in the International Business field, including cognate disciplines, and does not become dominated by a particular perspective or approach to IB scholarship.

The EIC is responsible for the content and organization of JIBS, management of the manuscript review and selection process, adherence to the AIB’s Codes of Ethics, and establishing a working relationship with the journal’s publisher (Palgrave Macmillan).  The EIC provides the public face of the journal and is responsible for communications and travel to promote the journal, as appropriate. The EIC reports to the AIB Executive Board and attends the Board’s annual meeting. Major policy decisions for JIBS are the responsibility of the AIB Executive Board while the management of the journal is the responsibility of the EIC. The AIB Executive Secretariat staffs a full-time Managing Editor of JIBS who is responsible for the Manuscript Central online submission and management system, including the processing of manuscripts and communication between authors, reviewers, editors, and publisher.

The EIC is responsible for forming an editorial team, and has discretion over the team’s structure, roles and the editor who will fill each role. The current EIC, Alain Verbeke, has a half-time Editorial Assistant at his own university. Financially, the AIB will contribute resources to the EIC for non-personnel expenses directly related to the operation of the journal editorial (e.g., travel, supplies, etc.). The expectation is that the EIC’s university will contribute resources (such as release-time, part-time assistant, etc.) to make the EIC’s editorial term successful, and the EIC’s university will be acknowledged in the journal.

For the EIC finalists (second stage), the proposals should include:

  • the full vita of the candidate
  • a description of the candidate’s ambitions for development of the journal in the rapidly-changing competitive landscape
  • the candidate’s editorial vision for JIBS and its team, including how they will recognize the diversity of scholars and scholarship within the field of IB, expand the outreach of JIBS across disciplines and geographies, and contribute to fulfilling the AIB mission, vision, and values
  • an outline of the candidate’s track record and how it will inform their tenure at JIBS
  • the candidate’s editorial team structure, and the editor who will fill each role on the team (name, area(s) of expertise, brief summary of background)
  • a description of confirmed resource commitment by the candidate’s university, for the 3-year editorial term, if available.

All inquiries should be directed to Tunga Kiyak, AIB Executive Director (Email: [log in to unmask]
) who co-chairs the JIBS Editor Selection Committee with the AIB President-Elect, Farok Contractor (Rutgers University).

Please submit applications by September 30, 2021, via email to Tunga Kiyak at [log in to unmask] .
