Position Description


TITLE:         Research Assistant II

DIVISION:      Academic Affairs (CELS: NRS)

REPORTS TO:    Principal Investigator and/or Research Associate

GRADE:         3

SUPERVISES:    Assistants as assigned


BASIC FUNCTION:

Under general supervision, perform research work or tests on materials or specimens in support of the Wildlife Genetics and Ecology Laboratory (WGEL) at the University of Rhode Island.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Under general supervision, assist in performing research work.

Conduct field research on New England cottontail located on an island and mainland sites in Rhode Island.


Trap New England cottontail and process animals for radio-collaring and translocation.

Implement and maintain field cameras on an island.

Collect fecal samples on an island during the winter.

Measure wildlife habitat with the use of modern intensive and extensive techniques, such as employing vegetation plot analyses, plant identification, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and remotely-sensed data analyses.

Input and maintain data in a database and quality control check data for accuracy.

Conduct data analyses and support WGEL field research as needed.

Assist in the analysis of samples.

Perform research work under occasional review.

Handle and maintain technical instruments required for performance of experiments.

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Perform additional duties as required.


LICENSES, TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT:

Personal computers, printers; word processing, database Management, ARC/GIS, and spreadsheet software.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:

This position is exposed to adverse environmental conditions. The position requires field work on a remote island during the winter and includes direct exposure to thorny vegetation, insect borne diseases, poison ivy, and extreme temperatures. Must be able to lift and carry 50 pounds, which could include field supplies, small mammal traps, equipment, etc. Must be able to hike through difficult habitat numerous miles on consecutive days.

QUALIFICATIONS:

REQUIRED: Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science or related field; Minimum of two years of experience conducting wildlife field research; Demonstrated ability to camp in the winter on a remote island; Demonstrated strong verbal and interpersonal communication skills; Demonstrated proficiency in written communication skills; Demonstrated ability to work as a team member; and, Demonstrated ability to work with diverse groups/populations. Must be able to lift and carry 50 pounds (supplies, traps, etc.)

PREFERRED: Demonstrated experience trapping and radio-collar tracking small mammals; Demonstrated experience conducting field camera research; Demonstrated experience conducting habitat analyses; Demonstrated experience conducting analyses using GIS software; and, Demonstrated supervisory experience.
