The Organic Center series on biological soil amendments
I hope you can join us for these important conversations as we are joined by researchers from the Produce Safety Alliance at Cornell University and the University of California, Davis
to learn about their research.
Using biological soil amendments is one option among many that growers have to manage plant growth and build healthy soils. Some soil amendments are biological soil amendments of
animal origin (BSAAOs) and they are primarily used as a nutrient source and to build up organic matter in the soil. This two-part webinar series will outline benefits and risk reduction practices when using manure, compost, and other BSAAOs often used on produce
farms. The relationship between these BSAAO recommendations and the requirements in the National Organic Program, Food Safety Modernization Act Produce Safety Rule, and third-party Good Agricultural Practices audits will also be explored.
On July 15 at 9:00 Pacific/noon Eastern, during Session I our presenters will introduce how the use of BSAAOs improves soil health. Research on pathogen survival in BSAAO-amended
soils will be presented, as well as how growers can minimize the risks of using untreated soil amendments through proper application, storage, handling, and recordkeeping practices. Other common practices will be introduced including rotational grazing. Join
us as we introduce how the use of BSAAOs improve soil health.

On July 23 at 9:00 Pacific/noon Eastern, Session II in our series will highlight science-based composting practices that growers can use to minimize microbial food safety risks while
reaping the soil health and production benefits from the use of BSAAO. A discussion will follow about the treatment status and documentation requirements for other common BSAAO such as vermicompost, fish emulsion, and pelletized poultry litter.

Beef Marketing Webinar
Offered by MSUE Beef Marketing Team- July 21, 7:00-8:30 pm
For small and larger scale beef operations (all meats). This program will help animal farmers to learn about direct marketing of their products. This is a great way to promote quality, locally
produced beef and other meat you produce.
The WEBinar is FREE-sign up to receive connection information but registration is needed to reserve your spot!!
Most farmers are great at producing crops and livestock, it really does not matter if it is a grain or grass finished product, most have figured out how get the job done, and do it well. The
hang up for most tends to be on the marketing side. In the spring of 2019, the
MSU Beef Team conducted a statewide needs survey, and marketing was definitely on the list of items that producers wanted help with.
This webinar will showcase 3 farms that are willing to share their experiences and expertise around the topic of marketing. If your farm is producing and direct marketing its protein products,
then this webinar will be a great use of your time.
Topics to Include:
*Pilaroc Farms, located in Fayetteville, TN (25 miles north of Huntsville, AL) is owned by Walt and Jennie Schutte-Patrick. We have sold through all avenues, including restaurants, grocery stores,
farmers markets and out of our famous meat wagon. But, starting in July, will be going solely through a new farm store, that will not only sell our meats but over 60 other farmer and small-business owner made products from the southeast. In addition to the
store, we will be cutting our own meats in our further-processing facility. As well as concentrating much of our efforts on agritourism at the farm.
*Apsey Farms is a 4th generation centennial farm located in Reed City, MI. Apsey Farms produces and distributes the highest quality pasture-raised meat using regenerative agriculture practices
including rotational livestock grazing. They also partner with several other regenerative farms in the state to expand their meat supply chain and serve more families.
8JNelson Farms produces healthy food for people who prefer locally grown, chemical free food. This includes vegetables, eggs from free range chickens and 100% Grassfed/grass finished beef. Our
goal is to improve the health of the land and the food that it produces for our customers.
