Michigan Organic Listserv Michigan State University Center for Regional Food Systems Desk of Vicki Morrone ([log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>) July 20, 2021 Information to share and learn The Organic Center series on biological soil amendments I hope you can join us for these important conversations as we are joined by researchers from the Produce Safety Alliance at Cornell University and the University of California, Davis to learn about their research. Using biological soil amendments is one option among many that growers have to manage plant growth and build healthy soils. Some soil amendments are biological soil amendments of animal origin (BSAAOs) and they are primarily used as a nutrient source and to build up organic matter in the soil. This two-part webinar series will outline benefits and risk reduction practices when using manure, compost, and other BSAAOs often used on produce farms. The relationship between these BSAAO recommendations and the requirements in the National Organic Program, Food Safety Modernization Act Produce Safety Rule, and third-party Good Agricultural Practices audits will also be explored. On July 15 at 9:00 Pacific/noon Eastern, during Session I our presenters will introduce how the use of BSAAOs improves soil health. Research on pathogen survival in BSAAO-amended soils will be presented, as well as how growers can minimize the risks of using untreated soil amendments through proper application, storage, handling, and recordkeeping practices. Grant Opportunities Now Accepting Letters of Intent for 2021 Research Grants July 13, 2021— OFRF is excited to announce that we are now accepting Letters of Intent (LOI) for our research grant program. We recognize climate change is one of the most pressing challenges for farmers, ranchers, and society as a whole. Therefore, we are prioritizing research that maximizes the potential for organic agriculture to be part of the climate solution. OFRF will fund projects for up to $20,000 for one year of research. Submissions must fall under at least one of the six research priority areas: soil health focus; weed, pest, and disease management focus; resilient cultivars focus; livestock and poultry focus; social science focus; and/or resilience focus. This grant cycle, in addition to continuing our support for farmer-led research, OFRF is prioritizing applications from early career researchers and Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC). We believe it is critical to foster the next generation of researchers and support historically underserved and marginalized communities, while also ensuring all farmers have the most up-to-date and science-based information.
