Subject: Postdoctoral position at Purdue University
External Email - Exercise Caution

A postdoctoral position is available in wildlife population modeling at Purdue University. The successful applicant will be mentored by Rob Swihart and have access to a wealth of population-level data on wildlife collected in three regional management units as part of a large multi-year project funded by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources Division of Fish and Wildlife. The state seeks improved estimates of deer, coyote, and bobcat abundance to inform management decisions that incorporate biological, ecological, and sociological factors. Primary duties of the position include developing and evaluating models of abundance (for coyotes) and occupancy (for bobcats) that account for imperfect detection and integrate data from multiple sources. Data sources include replicated scat transect and hair snare surveys yielding genetically determined individual (coyote) and species-level detections, ca. 3 million images from camera-trap arrays calibrated for distance estimation, roadkill records, hunter surveys, and limited coyote age-at-harvest records. Additional research opportunities are available to the motivated applicant with interest in integrated population models or the role of density and environment on inclusion of deer in coyote diets.

Funding is available initially for 1 year, with extension contingent on progress, fit, and availability of funds. Salary is competitive, commensurate with experience, and includes benefits. Remote work locations can be accommodated if warranted. The successful applicant will join a team of faculty, staff, postdoctoral, and graduate student researchers who value ongoing professional development and are committed to a supportive and collaborative work environment.

To apply, send an updated CV, available start date, and contact information for three references via email to [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>. The position is available 21 June 2021, but some flexibility in start date can be accommodated. Applications will be considered on a rolling basis beginning in mid-June and continue until the position is filled.
