Dear AIB member,

As part of the renewed partnership between the Academy of International Business (AIB) and UNCTAD, AIB will organize three sessions at UNCTAD’s World Investment Forum (WIF) which will take place in Abu Dhabi on October 17-21, 2021. We are seeking six AIB scholars who wish to present their current research at the WIF on one of the following topics:

Digital globalization: the new frontier for MNEs

What is the evidence of digital globalization and where is it going? Foe or friend for sustainable post-pandemic recovery and internationalization? Reassessment of the 'conventional role' of foreign investment and MNEs for sustainable development. Potential impact on SDGs; The shifting national and international policy-space in an era of digital globalization. Are there lessons from our International Business research and evidence base for the type of smarter policies in light of opportunities and threats of digital globalization?

FUTURE-PROOFING sustainable GVCs in the post pandemic era

Impetus of the pandemic on issues of sustainability, resilience and changes in the landscape of Global Value Chains (GVCs), Regional Value Chains, coordinated National Value Chains? What is the role of GVCs for sustainable recovery, where does it leave developing countries that banked on participation in GVCs? What possible answers can our IB research give here for policymakers and practitioners? What are the conditions that facilitate or impede the global diffusion of sustainable practices by multinational corporations?

Aligning multinational firms for the “decade of action”: a real prospect or wishful thinking?
Reaching the sustainable development goals require deep engagement of multinational firms. However, the business sector still lacks clarity and consistency on what SDG-alignment looks like. This panel discusses what role MNEs can play in pursuing SDGs and how MNE-government collaboration can further enhance this.

To be considered for one of the panels, authors should send a current paper on the topic to [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]> by midnight (EST) on July 31, 2021. Scholars will be selected based on the quality of their paper, its fit with the session theme, and the “pitch” that it provides to the WIF audience. The criterion for the latter is whether the authors have something to say that business and policy people have not heard before and that will be of value to business/policy.

In light of the current context, the WIF allows both in-person and virtual attendance. Please indicate in your submission whether you plan to participate in-person or if you prefer to present virtually. Note that AIB cannot cover the travel expenses, lodging costs or conference fee of authors who are invited to present in the panels.

This year’s World Investment Forum will discuss investing in sustainable recovery. Today’s key challenge for the international community is to reignite international investment as an engine of growth. The Forum will therefore address global challenges for international investment in the post-pandemic era, which is shaped by transformative policy, technology change, and new demands for sustainability and greater resilience.
