Northern White-Cedar Field Technicians

We are seeking motivated individuals to assist with a new Northern white-cedar regeneration project during the 2021 summer field season. This is part of a new multi-year project funded by the MI DNR Forest Resources Division that is evaluating if previous silvicultural treatments have resulted in cedar regeneration and provide recommendations for additional silvicultural research and management to facilitate lowland cedar management in the state of Michigan.  We are hiring technicians to work on small crews focusing on either the Western UP, Eastern UP, or Northern LP.

Duration: 12 weeks; June, July, August.

Work Environment: Requires strenuous physical activity: periods of standing, walking off-trail several miles per day in uneven terrain, and carrying field gear.  Data entry in office.

Work Schedule: 40 hours per week with a flexible schedule, including 10 hour days Monday-Thursday to be determined by weather and distance to field sites.

Primary Duties:
● Navigate to and from field sites
● Tree identification
● Collect vegetation, soils, and light data according to protocols
● Digitize collected data

Qualifications: Training will be provided to the successful applicant, but we would prefer
● Experience using GPS and GIS, interpret standard procedures, and consult field guides
● Experience identifying native plants and collecting forest inventory or ecological data
● Experience with topographic maps, compass, and aerial photos for navigation
● Must be willing to work long-days in a variety of weather conditions
● Must possess a valid driver's license

Compensation: Pay starts at $12-$16/hour depending on prior skills and experience.
