Seasonal Fisheries Positions



Position: Short-term State Worker (Fisheries) located at the Wolf Lake State Fish Hatchery; 34270 CR 652, Mattawan, MI 49071



Wage: State worker hourly pay rates are $10.60 for first-time workers or those with less than 400 hours of previous MDNR experience; $11.36 with 400+ hours of MDNR experience in 2020, and $12.11 with 400+ hours of MDNR experience in each of 2019 and 2020.



Duration: Eighteen weeks (719 hours). Starting date is flexible between April and early May. There is also a possible extension for a total term of 1,040 hours. Weekend work will be required.



Duties: Responsible for functioning as a member of a fish hatchery work unit. Is knowledgeable in and carries out the full range of tasks, methods, practices and procedures used in technical fish culture. The purpose of the job is to produce a specified number of healthy, high quality fish to be planted as a tool in fisheries management. Duties are as follow: Assist hatchery technicians with daily care of cold and coolwater fish including feeding fish, cleaning tanks, removing and recording daily fish mortality (includes ability to lift 45 lbs., repetitively). This position will also be involved with loading fish onto planting units and assisting with walleye, steelhead, and muskellunge egg takes (depending on starting date).



Qualifications: Applicants should be self-starting, highly motivated individuals interested in performing fisheries-related work that often involves strenuous physical labor. Preference will be given to applicants with knowledge of fish hatcheries or animal husbandry. Academic coursework, work experience, and other skills are also considered. Civil Service rules require all State Workers to submit to and pass a pre-employment drug test. Applicant must be 18 yrs. or older and possess a valid driver’s license.



Housing: Housing may be available at Wolf Lake SFH.
