Subject: Dual LTE position

FYI – our new dual LTE position has posted (see below).

This is a cool opportunity to contribute to research and would be a great position for a recent masters student or very quantitative undergrad.

Please distribute to any potential candidates.

Thanks!
Jen

  2. Assist the Lead Decision Analyst in applying structured decision making (SDM) to address decision problems within the agency. Projects will vary, but often include informing decisions related to game management, habitat management for native ecological communities, and rare species conservation, among others. The successful applicant will assist with planning and implementing SDM workshops, organizing and analyzing relevant datasets, and the development of qualitative and quantitative models to inform decision making. The position will be based out of Rhinelander, WI and will begin in May. Well-qualified candidates may be eligible for a later start date.

Description of goals/duties:
35% Data summary and analysis

  * Analyze wildlife population data using a range of models, i.e. spatial capture-recapture, survival analyses, occupancy models
  * Summarize data required for annual reports and species committee meetings
  * Prepare manuscripts for submission to peer-reviewed publications

15% Research Project Management

  * Assist in development of scientific studies to address wildlife research questions, i.e. development of a study to evaluate methods for monitoring elk populations
  * Manage and coordinate data collection and field technician assignments
  * Coordinate with WDNR Scientists, wildlife management staff, and partners on updates and needs related to individual projects
  * Create and manage databases; manage metadata

25% Contribute to ongoing SDM projects

  * Conduct literature reviews or analysis of available data to parameterize decision models
  * Help lead decision analyst working with expert groups to elicit model parameters
  * Contribute to writing of scientific articles on SDM projects

Required qualifications

  * Knowledge of wildlife ecology and management, strong data management skills, and demonstrated experience analyzing wildlife population data (i.e. spatial capture-recapture, survival analyses, population matrix models, N-mixture models)
  * Experience with frequentist and Bayesian approaches for analyzing data using R and JAGS (or similar)
  * Ability to organize and manage large-scale field research, specifically related to wildlife
  * Quantitative skills, including linear models, generalized linear mixed models, matrix population models
  * Previous understanding of, or interest in learning how to apply, structured decision making or other decision making frameworks to tackle complex natural resource problems.
  * Applicants should also be able to demonstrate positive leadership and the ability to work with diverse stakeholders.
  * An ability to communicate scientific information to a general audience through written content and oral presentations.
  * Proficient with R, Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, GIS (R packages or ArcMap programs)
