Temporary Seasonal Contracted Fisheries Technician

Agency/Location:  USGS Great Lakes Science Center, 1451 Green Road, Ann Arbor, Michigan 48105 with work expected on the St. Marys River, Lake Michigan, Lake Huron, St. Clair River, Lake St. Clair, Detroit River, Lake Erie, & St. Lawrence River. This is a full-time seasonal position for the spring and summer 2021.

Eligibility for hire as a student services contractor: Must be enrolled in a college or university or have graduated within one year prior and be able to begin work in March 2021. Must be willing and able to travel for extended time periods, work nights and weekends when needed, maintain a cheerful positive attitude, be a productive member of a team, and abide by strict laboratory and field protocols and safety policies & procedures. Must possess a valid driver’s license and passport (possible travel to Canada), valid CPR and First Aid certificates, and pass a federal background check. Experience on small boats (26’) with outboard engines is desirable, but not essential.

Responsibilities:  Primary responsibilities include participation as a team member in fish spawning and nursery habitat surveys of the Central Great Lakes and connecting channels investigating patterns relating to fish diversity and abundance, habitat quality and availability, habitat restoration, and aquatic invertebrate community dynamics.  Incumbent will assist with: (1) field sampling of fishes including fish eggs and larvae, physical habitat data, water quality, and invertebrates; (2) laboratory processing of biological samples, including sorting and identification of fishes (eggs and larvae) and invertebrates, and assist with rearing of live eggs and larvae; and (3) data entry.  Incumbent will assist with maintenance of field gear, laboratory facilities, and vessels/vehicles.

Qualifications:  Must be enrolled in a college or university or have graduated within one year prior and be able to begin work in March 2021. Recent graduate or working toward an undergraduate degree in fisheries or a closely related field preferred.  Recent graduates and those looking to fulfill an internship are encouraged to apply.  The applicant must be capable of travel for extended periods to include some weekends, nights, and working long and varied hours on boats in extreme weather conditions.

Salary:  Commensurate with experience and education level based on standard government pay rates. Lodging and travel allowance may be provided for some work. Personal field apparel and mandatory safety equipment will be provided.
