Purpose

The emergence of new infectious diseases such as Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), commonly known as COVID-19 poses a great danger to human life. On March 11, 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared COVID-19 a global pandemic. Since then, this pandemic has considerably impacted many people’s lives across the globe. As a result, many countries around the world went into lockdown, adopted social distancing, closure of academic institutions, non-essential businesses, and workplaces to prevent the spread of the coronavirus (e.g., Daly et al., 2020; Gössling, Scott, & Hall, 2020; Roy et al., 2020). Although lockdown reduces the spread of COVID-19, in most countries (e.g., United States, Canada, and Australia) there are concerns about the COVID-19 effects upon mental health causing extreme stress (Charityvillage, 2021; SmartCompany, 2020), which is widespread, and uncontrollable compared to stress experienced in everyday life (Main et al., 2011). In addition to immediate effects on the economy and labor markets (Anger et al., 2020; Möhring et al., 2020; Naumann et al., 2020), COVID-19 pandemic has a psychological dimension, as it can be associated with declines in key facets of people’s subjective well-being (Zacher & Rudolph, 2020). Therefore, this new epidemic can cause enormous damage to countries, businesses, and individuals on different levels.

The impact of the pandemic on business organizations is unprecedented. Business organizations in all sectors (including hospitality and tourism businesses) are increasingly worried about the mental health and well-being issues of their employees presented by escalating COVID-19 pandemic. Mental health and wellbeing are a huge concern especially for the employees in the hospitality and tourism industry. Employees in this industry experience psychological burdens and extreme stress due to the nature of the contact that occurs in the process of serving customers in new epidemics such as SARS, MERS, and COVID-19 (Yu et al., 2021). Many previous empirical researches have suggested various causes of stress perceived by hospitality and tourism industry employees (Hon et al., 2013; Karatepe et al., 2018; Kim et al., 2015); however, mental health and subjective well-being impacted by COVID-19 pandemic in the hospitality and tourism industry is yet to be examined.  Thus, the purpose of this special issue is to examine the impact of COVID-19 global pandemic on various stakeholders (e.g., employees and employers) in the hospitality and tourism industry and their mental health and well-being and draw the attention to the socio- psychological, physical, and technological changes that are currently reshaping the hospitality and tourism sector.
