Job Title:  Natural Resources Crew Member
Location:  Springfield Township, MI
Employment Status:  Temporary, Non-Exempt
Employment Duration:  Approximately 24 weeks, early May- mid October
Reports To:  Reports directly to Natural Resources Manager
Pay Rate:  $14.00-16.00 hourly, depending on education, experience and certifications.
Job Summary and Essential Functions:
Springfield Township, located in northern Oakland County, Michigan, has been a regional leader in conservation planning and sustainable development for over 30 years.  This position offers an exciting opportunity to help advance the township’s commitment to natural areas management through its Natural Resources Management Crew.  Successful applicants will have an opportunity to work in one of the highest quality prairie fen complexes in the world, while improving habitat for numerous state and federally listed plant and animal species including the federally endangered Poweshiek skipperling.
Under the supervision of the Natural Resources Manager, the Natural Resources Crew Member performs ecological restoration activities across Springfield Township in a diverse array of habitats on township-owned and partner lands.  Habitat management activities in support of ecological restoration include invasive species control, preparations for prescribed burning, debris removal, native plant seed collection and collection of field data in support of these activities.  Other activities may include assisting with volunteer workdays, township events and park maintenance tasks.  He/she will be responsible for preparation and maintenance of equipment and work logs used in these management activities.  This is a temporary position requiring approximately 35 hours per week with an anticipated employment duration of approximately 24 weeks.  Ability to work into October of 2021 is preferred.  Further employment in this position will be contingent on funding, performance and work needs.  The position involves extensive outdoor physical labor in diverse weather conditions and may require working some evenings and weekends.
Responsibilities & Scope:

  *   May work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain, and under physically demanding circumstances.
  *   Requires considerable physical exertion and/or muscular strain.
  *   Requires long hours in isolated settings.
  *   Makes day to day decisions as delegated by supervisor.
  *   May work under infrequent supervision.
Minimum Qualifications:

  *   High school diploma and 1 year’s training in science-related field or related experience in land management.
  *   Experience recognizing plant and animal species.
  *   Experience operating various types of power equipment.
  *   Experience working in a team environment.
  *   Ability to conduct ecological stewardship activities in the field.
  *   Ability to provide both oral and written communication that is easily understood and direct in its content.
  *   Ability to obtain a Commercial Pesticide Applicator License in Forestry, Aquatic and Right-of-Way categories from the State of Michigan within 90 days of employment.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills & Experience:

  *   Greater than one year of experience in land management.
  *   Documented training or certification for power tool operation.
  *   Possession of a current Commercial Pesticide Applicator License in Forestry, Aquatic and Right-of-Way categories from the State of Michigan.
  *   Experience working in or knowledge of prairie fens and associated natural communities
  *   Experience following conservation guidelines when managing habitat for rare species.
