Post-doctoral Research Associate– Status of Bats in the Midwestern United States
Description:
The University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) is hiring a Postdoctoral Research Associate to aid in a project assessing the status of bats in eight Midwestern states that are in US Fish and Wildlife Service Region 3. Project objectives include compiling available acoustic monitoring data from participating states, using presence/absence data to derive occupancy probabilities and to develop distribution maps, and generating status assessments for each bat species in this region. The post-doctoral researcher will work closely with state and federal partners and NABat team members to gather, process, and upload data following NABat protocols. The post-doctoral researcher will mentor undergraduate and graduate students and work as part of a larger team of researchers addressing bat conservation issues. In the spring of 2021, the post-doctoral researcher and a technician will make short field forays to various states to fill in identified gaps in acoustic data. The post-doctoral researcher will be responsible for communicating the research to the broader scientific community by authoring reports to USGS, writing peer-reviewed manuscripts, developing web resources, and creating webinars to share with state partners.
The post-doctoral researcher will also aid the PIs in developing the NABat Midwest Regional Bat Hub. This hub will coordinate with local, state, and federal partners to monitor bats across the region, providing technical and logistical support to partners, and using broad-scale bat occurrence data collected by partners to answer questions about habitat associations, population trends, and spatial and temporal distribution patterns.
This position will be based on the campus of the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign, Illinois, though remote work is possible for the first few months. This project is funded through the end of August 2021 via an award from the US Geological Survey (USGS); funding for Year 2 and Year 3 will be contingent upon availability of funds and satisfactory progress towards project goals. The post-doctoral researcher will be co-mentored by Dr. Joy O’Keefe (Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Sciences, UIUC) and Dr. Brian Reichert (USGS, NABat - North American Bat Monitoring Program).
Qualifications:
Applicants should have earned a PhD in natural sciences or ecology by the start date. Applicants must be proficient in statistical analyses in R and spatial analyses in GIS and provide evidence of their ability to author peer-reviewed manuscripts. Preference will be given to candidates with experience managing large datasets, coding in R and Python, analyzing bat acoustic data, building occupancy models, and with ample experience collaborating as part of a team. Candidates should be critical and creative thinkers who generate new ideas and approaches. It is also important that candidates can work independently and remotely, with a high degree of motivation, a positive attitude, and the willingness to solve problems as they arise. Strong candidates will demonstrate their stellar written and oral communication abilities during the application process. The selected candidate must possess a valid U.S. driver’s license.
Salary and appointment:
Funding for the position is guaranteed through August 2021, with the potential for two additional years. The salary rate is $45,000/year plus benefits.
