The practice of international business continues to evolve in the current environment, with mega-disruptions and much uncertainty. For international business educators, the changing environment of cross-border business implies new and novel approaches to educating tomorrow's managers. Among other things, business educators need to reflect new realities including: risk management, trade conflicts, increased polarization, and another phase of prolonged recession.
Yet, our teaching has to be relevant, engaging, and innovative. The new generation of students, both undergraduate and graduate, provides new challenges for the instructor. How can we share the excitement of international markets with our students? How can we best connect and communicate with them via such pedagogical approaches as: experiential exercises and projects; web-based learning; videos; and cases and exercises?
This interactive session will focus on: (a) “what” — content; (b) “how” — pedagogy; and (c) “resources” — for teaching international business. The presenters will share experience and teaching tools that have been especially developed for IB educators. The intent is also to engage participants in an interactive discussion designed to search for excellence in the teaching of international business.
S. Tamer Cavusgil has been teaching international business/marketing for more than three decades. His professional interests encompass global marketing strategy, early internationalization, emerging markets, exporting, and pedagogy. Cavusgil is currently Fuller E. Callaway Professorial Chair, and Executive Director, Center for International Business Education and Research (CIBER), at the Institute of International Business, Robinson College of Business, Georgia State University. Tamer is an elected Fellow of the Academy of international Business, and a visiting professor at the University of South Australia and the University of Leeds.
Ilke Kardes is currently an Assistant Professor of Marketing & International Business at Valdosta State University. She received Teacher Excellence Award in both 2018-2019 and 2019-2020 academic year. Previously, Dr. Kardes taught classes in International Business at the Institute of International Business and served as Research Director at Center for International Business and Education Research (CIBER) at Georgia State University. Her research interests focus on emerging markets, middle class, branding, cross border e-commerce, and pedagogy in higher education. Her academic career and abilities have been shaped in different cultures including United States, Germany, and Turkey during years. Ilke is fluent in English, German, and Turkish.
Gary Knight is the Helen Jackson Chair in International Management at Willamette University in Salem and Portland, Oregon, USA. He has won awards for teaching at Willamette and Florida State University. He is an elected Fellow, and currently a Vice President, of the Academy of International Business. He has co-authored seven books on international business. Gary’s research emphasizes international entrepreneurship and international strategy. He has authored more than 100 refereed articles in journals and conference proceedings. In various rankings, he has been named one of the top cited scholars in international business and international marketing.
John Riesenberger, an international business executive and educator, John served as Vice-President for a leading pharmaceutical company and served as a Corporate Vice-President and Chief Commercialization Officer of a biotechnology firm. John’s academic affiliations include serving as a Clinical Professor of Executive Development, Corporate Learning Group, at the Thunderbird School of Global Management. He has served as an Executive-In-Residence at the Michigan State University Center for International Business Education and Research (CIBER). His passion is assisting students in the development of the intangible people (soft) skills essential for success in today’s business environment. Critical to this effort is assisting instructors in linking student personal employment goals with course learning outcomes.
