Subject: Future Positions Coming to the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge

Hello IWRA Board –

In the very near future, the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge will be adverting for two GS-7 Park Ranger positions. Both will be full-time, permanent positions with the federal government. One will focus on delivering place based, environmental education and the other will focus on volunteer management and coordination. In order to ensure we get a well-rounded group of applicants, I am sending this email to partners along with some details about the positions and the application process. Please share with others as you see fit.

The application process has NOT yet started. This email is to ensure you begin thinking about the process to apply, since it is fairly complicated.

In addition, I have also included a GS pay scale for the metro Detroit region to give you an idea of annual pay.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service uses an online process called USAJOBS to collect resumes which assists in the rating, ranking and referring candidates for jobs. Please note this is a complicated website (usajobs.gov<https://nam02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Furldefense.com%2Fv3%2F__http%3A%2F%2Fusajobs.gov__%3B!!HXCxUKc!hMyuyrVEcvLhaCz9KsRSYqNBX0TpUErwFCPr1zdc3FuD3lbYDAzsNfr6Vn1SFmQ%24&data=01%7C01%7Cbohling%40msu.edu%7Cd6661772621147e7373208d818463ef6%7C22177130642f41d9921174237ad5687d%7C0&sdata=H%2F3RzukzdxsPfdD4cFm3GIqD0iZwQ5TKtbVOtMgz3xo%3D&reserved=0>) and contains information on all federal jobs throughout the entire Unites States. They offer a resume builder tool that is extremely helpful. Federal resumes are much different than the one-pager you may be used to using for private sector jobs. Most federal resumes are 10+ pages long. (I think mine may be up to 15 pages!!) Developing this type of resume is time consuming so I recommend if you are interested in one of these positions, you begin updating your application materials now. Begin by creating a free account on USAJOBS.gov and using the attached resources to help get you started. While on the site, you can set up alerts with parameters such as job location or title so you will be emailed as soon as the position is opened. Most positions are only open for a week or two so it helps to have started this process early.

Please remember, the first people reviewing your resume are national HR Specialists. More than likely they will have no knowledge about the Park Ranger position here at Detroit River. Help them push your application along the process by thoroughly describing your job experiences and the skills you used in the position. You can always focus on skills such as multi-tasking, finding methods to make your job more efficient, and customer service.

If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to me. My supervisor, Refuge Manager Susan White, and I would be happy to host a webinar on the application process if anyone is interested.

Thanks for your interest in the refuge,

jody
