GEM&L Newsletter n° 31 Message from the Chairman Date : June 11, 2020 Chers collègues et amis du GEM&L, Nous espérons que vous êtes toutes et tous en forme après cette longue et difficile période de confinement et de lutte contre la terrible épidémie qui a frappé le monde. Nous avons une pensée particulièrement triste pour celles et ceux d'entre nous qui ont perdu un parent proche ou un ami. Pourtant la vie continue. Elle doit continuer et pour nous la vie de notre communauté GEM&L s'inscrit dans ce mouvement vital qui anime la vigueur de la recherche en management et langage. Le conseil d'administration du GEM&L n'a pas cessé d'être actif lors de cette période de quasi parenthèse de l'action, alors que la plupart d'entre nous devait faire face au défi du télé-enseignement, tout en continuant à gérer les programmes dans les business schools et souvent aussi à faire l'école à la maison pour les enfants. Nous saluons le dévouement des uns et des autres pour les étudiants, l'institution, la recherche et la famille. Leur sacrifice a été exemplaire durant cette difficile période. Comme annoncé dans notre dernière newsletter, le colloque du GEM&L est reporté à mai 2021. Pour plus de détails, merci de vous reporter à la newsletter n°30 d'avril 2020. Cependant, nous avons reçu beaucoup de papiers de qualité pour 2020 et après le remarquable travail fait par la commission que nous avons mise en place pour distinguer les meilleurs auteurs et évaluateurs, nous sommes en mesure d'annoncer les résultats du « best paper award » et du » best reviewer award » pour cette année. Le best paper award a été attribué à GURO SANDEN pour son papier intitulé « Domain loss theory revisited: A multilevel analysis of language use in Scandinavian business ». Une seconde place a été attribuée à GARY MASSEY et REGINE WIEDER pour leur étude sur le pouvoir caché des traducteurs intitulé « Harnessing a hidden power: International corporate communications, translators and translatorial agency ». Pour le best doctoral paper, nous avons deux gagnants ex aequo : DANIELE TAYLOR pour sa recherche sur « Le management des équipes virtuelles plurilingues » et HILLA BACK pour son étude de la diversité linguistique et l'inclusion sociale. Enfin nous avons décerné le « best reviewer award » à PETER DALY et le « best doctoral paper reviewer award » à AMY CHURCH. Félicitations à toutes et tous et un grand merci pour leurs excellentes contributions. Je souhaite également remercier très vivement les membres du jury de sélection des GEM&L AWARDS, JANE KASSIS-HENDERSON, GENEVIEVE TREGUER-FELTEN ET MARY VIGIER. La tâche était très difficile et ils ont accompli un travail colossal tout à fait remarquable. La recherche ne se limite pas aux grands échanges d'idées et d'évaluations critiques que constituent les colloques annuels. Entre ces évènements majeurs, le travail de recherche, souvent obscur et solitaire, continue. Les chercheurs ont besoin d'échanger à longueur d'année et de diffuser leurs travaux. J'ai le plaisir de vous annoncer le lancement d'une série de webinaires sur l'activité académique des membres du GEM&L. Ce seront les « GEM&L webinars » dont le premier sera inauguré le mercredi 2 juillet 2020 par notre collègue HAYLEY HARRIS sur le thème « Revaluing the human contribution to the translation business : A cross-disciplinary perspective ». Je voudrais remercier NATALIE WILMOT qui a accepté de piloter ce projet et l'Université de Bradford qui a accepté de le faciliter en nous offrant l'accès à ses installations numériques. Nous comptons organiser trois ou quatre webinaires par an afin de donner la parole à nos chercheurs et de leur offrir un lieu d'échanges. Nous avons envisagé de démarrer ce webinaire le 2 juillet à 15 heures (heure française). Dites-nous si vous êtes intéressé(e). Et surtout écrivez-nous pour nous dire quelle heure vous paraît la meilleure pour assurer à ce premier webinaire l'audience maximale. Son succès dépendra de vous. Amitiés Philippe Dear Colleagues and members of GEM&L, We hope you are all in good form in spite of this long and difficult period we have been through due to this dreadful worldwide pandemic. We offer our sympathy to those of you who may have lost a close relative or friend in the last months. But life goes on and the dynamism of those of us involved in language-sensitive research will reinvigorate our GEM&L community. The GEM&L board has kept busy throughout, even while most of us had to deal with the challenges of on-line teaching and at the same time continue to run Business School programmes and often manage home schooling for the children also. We acknowledge the commitment of everyone to their students, their institution, their research and their family. The sacrifices made during this period were exemplary. As announced in our last newsletter, the GEM&L 2020 conference has been postponed until May 2021. For further details, please consult newsletter n° 30 of April 2020. We received many high-quality papers for 2020 and the selection committee having completed their task of choosing the best papers and best reviewers, we are now able to announce the results for the best paper award and the best reviewer award for this year. The best paper award winner is GURO SANDEN for her paper on « Domain loss theory revisited: A multilevel analysis of language use in Scandinavian business »; in second place : GARY MASSEY and REGINE WIEDER for their paper on the hidden power of translators, entitled "Harnessing a hidden power: International corporate communications, translators and translatorial agency". For the best doctoral paper there are two winners ex aequo : DANIÈLE TAYLOR for her research on "The management of multilingual virtual teams" and HILLA BACK for her study on "Language diversity and social inclusion: Migrant's perspectives from university studies to the workplace". And finally the 'best reviewer award' goes to PETER DALY and the 'best doctoral paper reviewer award' to AMY CHURCH. Congratulations to you all and a big thank you for all the excellent contributions. I would also like to warmly thank the members of the award selection committee, JANE KASSIS-HENDERSON, GENEVIEVE TREGUER-FELTEN and MARY VIGIER. It was a daunting task and they have done a huge and excellent job. But research is about more than the exchange of ideas and critical reviews of papers on the occasion of annual conferences. Between these major events, research work, which is often obscure and solitary in nature, goes on. Scholars need to exchange ideas with one another throughout the year and to circulate their work. In this connection, I am pleased to announce the launch of a series of webinars based on the academic activity of GEM&L members. The first of these GEM&L webinars will take place on Wednesday 2 July 2020 and will be held by our colleague HAYLEY HARRIS on the theme "Revaluing the human contribution to the translation business: A cross-disciplinary perspective". I would like to thank NATALIE WILMOT for accepting to pilot this project and the University of Bradford for accepting to facilitate it by offering us access to their digital facilities. We intend to organize two or three webinars each year to offer a platform for our scholars so that they can inform one another about their research. We plan to start this first webinar on 2nd July at 14:00 (UK time). Please let us know if you are interested in participating and tell us what you think would be the best time of day to have the biggest audience for this first webinar. Its success will depend on you.
