The technicians will assist with field, lab, and computer work under the Supervision of the project leader and in collaboration with a larger field team. Field work will take place from small boats (< 26 foot), and involve launch, operation, and retrieval of AUVs, and collection of auxiliary data. The contractor may also assist with image manipulation tasks (i.e., image interpretation), web content generation, lab experiments, and miscellaneous research tasks at the Supervisor’s discretion. The contractor should expect to work up to 70 hours per week during the field season between June and November 2018, and 40 hours per week during non-field portions of the year. Why work for USGS? Qualifications To qualify you should: • Have a recent Bachelor’s degree (within 1 year of graduation) in fish and wildlife biology, ecology, natural resource management, environmental studies or relevant area of study. • Be a proficient swimmer. • Be comfortable working in small boats on large bodies of water in a variety of weather conditions. • Have the ability to safely manage heavy objects (<110 lbs) from the side of boat. • Be proficient with Microsoft Windows, Word, Excel, and Windows Explorer. • Have the ability to work in a self-directed manner and multi-task. • Be able to work harmoniously in a team setting. • Have a driver’s license and good driving record. • Possess good communication skills in both written and verbal forms. Desired qualifications: • Previous experience conducting research from small boats. • Proficiency in trailering and piloting small research vessels (<26 foot). • Specialized experience, knowledge, or coursework relevant to the project. Examples include: field ecology; Geographic Information Systems (GIS); programming (R, Matlab, or Python); field robotics; informatics; and/or scientific writing. • Proficiency with photo and video editing software. • SCUBA certification(s).
