1.       First Saturday webinar for Instructors of Online Field Courses and Camps (5/16), 12:00pm Eastern

 

We are hosting a new series of webinars (5/16, 5/30, 6/13, 6/27, 7/11, 7/25 at 12:00pm Eastern) to help folks quickly come up to speed regarding materials available, to facilitate interaction among activity developers & users, and to encourage sharing of pedagogical strategies & best practices. During the first week (5/16), we will focus on bringing field camp directors up to speed with respect to the “Designing Remote Field Experiences” effort,. Every week thereafter (starting on 5/30), we will spend a few minutes to share news, updates, & announcements. Then we will spend the remainder of our time together with 5 min presentations from those actively using materials that focus on sharing out feedback on student/instructor experiences. Presentations will be followed by a few minutes for questions.

2.       New online teaching resources for camps shifting to online formats

 

During the past several weeks, more than 300 members of the geoscience community  worked together as part of the Designing Remote Field Experiences project in an almost unprecedented effort to build the new pedagogical strategies, instructional resources, and digital infrastructure needed to support rapid transitions to online alternatives for field camps affected by the COIVD-19 pandemic. Among the many outcomes of this effort are a growing number of freely available, high-quality and peer-vetted activities that can be discovered, evaluated, and integrated by any instructor. Each activity is keyed to a new set of learning objectives & skills developed to satisfy both online and traditional field-based capstone courses. In this model, field camp instructors can use a "choose your own adventure" approach with available activities and assemble a set of modules that will satisfy the learning objectives of their particular program.

To date, there are 25 completed (or nearly so) modules that address a variety of needs (e.g., levels of complexity, application, etc.) available, and more are expected to be rolled out between now and June 1st. Current offerings include:
