Please forward this on. The San Luis National Wildlife Refuge Complex, located in the Central Valley of California, is hiring 3 biological science technicians to monitor the invasive nutria (Myocastor coypus) population. Nutria are invasive rodents that were first detected in California in 2017 and have spread rapidly to six counties throughout the state. Nutria cause substantial damage to wetland vegetation and water management infrastructure which are especially important to the Refuge Complex, which hosts hundreds of thousands of wintering waterfowl and shorebirds annually. The control of invasive species is mission critical to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, especially concerning nutria, where it is believed complete eradication from California is still achievable. The work of this position will fill an important role in the nutria management efforts on the Refuge Complex by identifying areas of concern and notifying management of new detections and new locations. Duties will include surveying wetlands in search of nutria sign, camera trapping, mapping in ArcGIS, data management and recording, performing necropsies and live trapping. Technicians may also help with other biological tasks on the complex including: colonial waterbird surveys, tricolored blackbird surveys, dove banding, and vegetation surveys. These are full-time temporary 1 year appointments, which may be extended for a total appointment of 2 years. The start date is flexible depending on applicant schedules, from April-May, 2020. Refuge housing is available for $265.25/month. The application deadline is 3/12/2020.
