FULL-TIME SEASONAL TECHNICIAN OPENING -
Great Lakes Environmental Center, Inc. (GLEC) is looking for qualified candidates to work in support of the US EPA’s 2020 National Coastal Conditions Assessment<https://www.epa.gov/national-aquatic-resource-surveys/ncca> (NCCA). The NCCA is a probabilistic survey of the nation’s coastal waters. GLEC anticipates hiring multiple seasonal field technicians and one laboratory technician for the field season of 2020 (May 26 through October 1, 2020). Pay is commensurate with experience.
Seasonal Field Technician position(s)
Applicant should have an interest in aquatic research and have a desire to gain additional experience in this field. The typical responsibilities for this position include working from a boat daily around the Great Lakes to collect data and samples related to surface water, sediment, and fisheries. Candidates must have a strong teamwork ethic, a flexible schedule, and a willingness to travel in and out of state, as necessary. Each field crew will travel for several weeks at a time while conducting daily site visits throughout the Great Lakes. Trips will last for several weeks before returning home for a short break, this will repeat throughout the summer. Meal and hotel per diem and other incidental travel expenses are paid by GLEC.
Physical Skill and Effort/Working Conditions: Safe driving and boat trailering, ability to lift 50+ pounds, ability to work in wilderness areas, ability to travel via air, must have a valid state driver’s license. Field Technician work often require long field days (> 10 hours) in small teams, working offshore from boats in potentially harsh weather conditions, working in hot and humid climates, traveling away from home for extended durations.
Seasonal Laboratory Technician position
Applicant should have an interest in environmental laboratory experience and participating in a team effort to track, inventory, and package field samples from the NCCA survey. Typical responsibilities for this position include daily work from our laboratory in Traverse City to accept and inventory incoming sample shipments, respond to field crew requests, and assist in general tasks to support the sampling survey.

Physical Skill and Effort/Working Conditions: Ability to lift 50+ pounds, work in and out of walk-in coolers/freezers, possible weekend scheduling. Laboratory Technician work requires coordinated team effort in a professional laboratory environment, analytical skills, and acute attention to detail.
