Subject: Northeast Fisheries Observer Program ~ Job Opportunities

Hey Jim,

I am still on the list serve for the job postings you pass along to students/past students, and I was hoping you could pass this along to anyone interested in finding out more information about applying as an observer candidate with the NMFS Observer Program. Observers, for all observing programs in the Northeast Fisheries Science Center(Industry Funded Scallop (IFS), Northeast Fisheries Observers (NEFOP), and At-Sea-Monitors (ASM)) are all contracted positions via NMFS approved observer "Providers". You would want to contact the providers directly (their contact information can be found on our website here: http://www.nefsc.noaa.gov/fsb/program.html<https://urldefense.com/v3/__http:/www.nefsc.noaa.gov/fsb/program.html__;!!HXCxUKc!mQePaibK-fHCF3xN2_ihx_1-qXjayxcccfQSIUEtFd_TgEZ4qEP7QvG1eRHMRoQhGQ$> ). Program qualifications, training program standards, training schedules, and a general overview of the various observing programs can also be found on our main website: http://www.nefsc.noaa.gov/fsb/<https://urldefense.com/v3/__http:/www.nefsc.noaa.gov/fsb/__;!!HXCxUKc!mQePaibK-fHCF3xN2_ihx_1-qXjayxcccfQSIUEtFd_TgEZ4qEP7QvG1eRGaCSbAHQ$> Generally, most providers would prefer to have a one year work commitment before sending a candidate for actual certification. Each provider have different business plans and focus, so contacting them directly is a good idea to find out employment details.

We do have several initial training opportunities that are coming up. There is an Industry Funded Scallop (IFS) and NEFOP class in March that all providers are recruiting for (EWTS, AIS, and Fathom). The training in April is also an initial training and will be certifying both NEFOP (AIS) and Industry Funded Scallop opportunities (EWTS, AIS, Fathom). I can pass along a projected training schedule if that is of use.

I would highly encourage you to contact all three observer providers for details and see where they are in the recruiting process:
