Subject: New M.S. student sought

External Email - Exercise Caution
Greetings!

I am seeking a new M.S. student to begin in my lab at CSU Fullerton in Fall 2020. I recently gained funding to support a graduate student to work on a field project in Colorado in Summer 2020 – prior to formally starting in the M.S. program – examining the effects of herbivores on shrub encroachment in shortgrass steppe, and its consequences for wildlife species (small mammals and/or birds). This is part of a long-term field experiment in collaboration with the USDA-ARS, with field work based at the Semi-arid Grasslands Research Center (SGRC) in north-central Colorado. The exact details of the project can be tailored to meet the student’s interests, and the student would be expected to conduct a second season of field work at the SGRC in 2021.

The student must be qualified for and willing to enter the M.S. in Biology program at CSU Fullerton https://www.fullerton.edu/biology/grads/<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/nam02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https*3A*2F*2Fwww.fullerton.edu*2Fbiology*2Fgrads*2F&data=02*7C01*7CMAMMAL-L*40SI-LISTSERV.SI.EDU*7Ca122a75e4e4445430c7e08d7b414cf9e*7C989b5e2a14e44efe93b78cdd5fc5d11c*7C0*7C0*7C637175873786628283&sdata=fA1onNAlpZx27iXXMbirUdWLXmpbV24BswD64pTwKfw*3D&reserved=0__;JSUlJSUlJSUlJSUlJSUl!!HXCxUKc!jc-ku7Hldj_DjsLgvJ0_s7Cp7bVS2HLIcxnHfPgNo19LEgd7oQZc6ahKTdxg1LDoyg$>, which has an application deadline of 15 MARCH 2020. Between May and August 2020, the student will be paid $15 per hour fulltime for up to 11 weeks in the field. Start dates can be somewhat flexible.

REQUIRED:
- Interest in an advanced degree in grassland ecology
- Qualifications to be admitted to the M.S. Biology program at CSUF in Fall 2020 [degree in biology or a related field, GPA >3.0 (preferably >3.3), GRE scores)
- Extensive field research experience (outside of college coursework) working independently in a remote setting, and a willingness to do so in northern Colorado
- Previous field experience working with small mammals (or birds), and experience with or strong interest in the ecology of prairie shrubs or other plants
- Be in good physical condition and be able to maintain a positive attitude living and working independently in unpredictable field conditions
- Possess a valid driver’s license and be able to drive a 4WD vehicle

If interested, by 24 FEBRUARY 2020 please send a cover letter (in the body of an email to [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>) expressing your interest and highlighting your relevant experience, an up-to-date CV (as an email attachment), and the names and contact information of two references familiar with your previous field experience. Please feel free to contact me by email if you have questions.

Thank you,
