Location: Lansing Customer Service Center, 4166 Legacy Parkway, Lansing, MI

Employment Dates: May 17, 2020 through September 30, 2020 or 719 hours whichever comes first

Number of Positions: 4

Work Hours: 8:00 am – 4:30 pm, Monday – Friday, hours may vary

Pay Rate: $17.40 per hour

Brief Job Description: These 4 positions will focus on waterfowl trapping and banding throughout the southern Lower Peninsula of Michigan, under the supervision of the Wildlife Division Bird Banding Program Coordinator. We are looking for individuals that have the ability to work independent of supervision as part of a small team, who will work aggressively to meet banding goals and solve problems, and who can carefully collect and maintain large amounts of data.

Duties involve determining potential banding locations, securing permission to band birds on private and public property, baiting and operating traps (swim-in traps, confusion traps, and floating traps), identifying, aging, sexing, banding, and humanely handling waterfowl, maintaining accurate and detailed banding records, maintaining and repairing traps and other equipment, using body gripping and/or live traps to handle potential predation issues, and dealing with the public and co-workers in a professional manner. Use of boats and other watercraft may be necessary. Two of the positions will be certified to use a firearm.

There is no housing available for these positions. However, there are many housing options in the East Lansing area around Michigan State University.

Selection Criteria:

Required for Employment

• Education: Possess a High School Diploma or GED certificate.

• Experience: No specific amount or type is required.

• Possess a valid driver’s license.



Desired for Employment

• Possession of, or working towards, a degree in Wildlife Management, Wildlife Biology, or a related field.

• Flexibility to work various hours, up to 40 hours per week, including some early mornings, late evenings and weekends.

• Ability to work independently.

• Ability to communicate well with co-workers and the public.

• Knowledge of waterfowl trapping and banding techniques.

• Ability to identify, age, and sex waterfowl.

• Knowledge of basic waterfowl biology.

• Knowledge of the safe use of hand and power tools.

• Knowledge or experience relating to wildlife and/or DNR programs.

• Ability to accurately read a map



Interview Selection Criteria:

• Possession of or working towards a degree in Wildlife Management, Wildlife Biology, or a related field.

• Experience trapping and banding waterfowl or other birds.

• Experience with data collection and record keeping.

• Experience interacting with the public.

• Experience operating hand and power tools.

• Experience working for any wildlife related agency.
