Wildlife Survey and Vegetation Sampling Field Assistant

We are seeking a field assistant who is highly self-motivated and hard-working to assist in wildlife surveys and vegetation data collection throughout aspen stands within the Pigeon River Country State Forest, Vanderbilt, Michigan. The selected candidate will be working alongside MSU graduate student Miranda VanCleave on a study evaluating the long-term effects of ungulate browsing on regenerating aspen.



Duration: First week of May through the end of August (end and start dates flexible)



Job Description:

  *   • Vegetation data collection including but not limited to: measuring DBH, heights, vertical/horizontal cover, and stem densities
  *   • Conduct wildlife surveys starting work before daylight into mid-morning (mostly song-bird surveys)
  *   • Collecting and recording large amounts of data and inputting data into excel spreadsheets
  *   • No more than 30 hours per week
  *   • $1,400 monthly stipend and travel expenses included



Qualifications:

  *   • Valid Driver’s License
  *   • Ability to work long hours in the field for consecutive days
  *   • Ability to work alone and with others
  *   • Ability to and experience in recording and collecting data
  *   • Ability to work in remote areas with limited to no cell reception
  *   • Ability to trek long distances (hiking)
  *   • Vegetation data collection experience
  *   • Wildlife survey data collection experience
  *   • Strong in song-bird ID (visual and audio), or ability to learn ID
  *   • Strong navigational skills (able to follow/use maps, GPS and compass)
