White-tailed Deer Research Technicians – Michigan State University

Description:

The Department of Fisheries and Wildlife at Michigan State University seeks 4 research technicians to assist in the second field season of a study designed to evaluate white-tailed deer demographics in central Michigan. This study is part of an assessment evaluating changes in abundance, and sex/age composition of deer in areas with varying deer harvest regulations.

Research technicians will be responsible for placing and monitoring trail cameras, evaluating photos, and keeping detailed records. Technicians will interact with Michigan landowners to gain access to private property and place cameras.

These full-time, temporary positions (40 hours/week) will provide technicians with the opportunity to interact with Michigan DNR employees, stakeholder groups, and local residents. Start date is flexible (between mid-May to mid-June 2020) and work will continue through the end of September 2020. Hourly wage will depend on experience (minimum $14/hour). A field vehicle will be supplied for transportation to and from the study area.

Qualifications:

A Bachelor’s degree in wildlife biology, ecology, or a related field is desired; applicants who have completed 2-years of a degree program in wildlife ecology or related field will be considered. Preference will be given to candidates with excellent communications skills and experience interacting with landowners to conduct field research.

Research technicians must possess a strong work ethic, be self-motivated, open to various viewpoints on deer management, enthusiastic, and capable of working in a team setting. They will be expected to work outdoors and use computer screens for extended periods of time. Some overnight travel may be required. Applicants must possess a valid driver’s license and have a good driving record.
