Symposium Summary

As the “African Century” heads into the 2020s, international business (IB) executives must develop a new perspective and forge new partnerships with government agency and civil society organization leaders to assure investment project survival and success and contribute to broader economic development in countries of Sub-Saharan Africa.

Those partnerships include MNE executives able to calculate the financial and social returns on investments benefitting economic growth and poverty alleviation. They include politicians able to make credible commitments to maintaining the stability in the investment policy environment. They include leaders in non-governmental organizations able to mediate between IB executives and politicians often at odds over investment project priorities. No single leader can assure business success and broader economic benefit in Sub-Sahara African countries. We need cross-sector perspectives and partnerships.

Much more needs to be done to document and theorize the complex interplay of international business and policy in the African context. This symposium seeks to bring together and develop thought leaders in the area. Papers will also be considered for a special issue of the Journal of International Business Policy.

Call for Paper Proposals, Registration and Accommodation

We seek paper proposals promising original research on the symposium topic of no more than six pages, inclusive of title, abstract, text, tables/figures and bibliographic references (Microsoft Word format, 12-point font, single-spaced, 1-inch margins and headers).

The deadline for paper proposals is Saturday, February 29, 2020. Decisions about proposal acceptance will be communicated on March 5, 2020.

Thanks to the sponsorship of the Journal of International Business Policy, the Gordon Institute of Business Science (GIBS) of the University of Pretoria and the Carlson School of Management of the University of Minnesota, travel and accommodation stipends will be awarded on a competitive basis.

Founded in 2000, the University of Pretoria's Gordon Institute of Business Science (GIBS) is an internationally accredited business school, based in Johannesburg, South Africa's economic hub. As the business school for business, we focus on general management in dynamic markets to significantly improve responsible individual and organisational performance, primarily in the South African environment and increasingly in our broader African environment, through the provision of high quality business and management education. In May 2016 the annual UK Financial Times Executive Education rankings, a global benchmark for providers of executive education, once again ranked GIBS as the top South African and African business school. This is the 13th year running that GIBS has been ranked among the top business schools worldwide. In October 2014 the GIBS MBA was ranked among the top 100 business schools globally in the prestigious Financial Times Executive MBA Rankings. GIBS is the only business school in Africa to appear in this ranking.

GIBS is accredited by the Association of MBAs (AMBA), the Council on Higher Education (CHE) and is a member of the South African Business Schools Association (SABSA), the Association of African Business Schools (AABS) and the European Academy of Business in Society (EABIS).
