Hey everyone, please help spread the news about these job opportunities in Alaska.

The US Fish and Wildlife Service's Alaska Region (Region) is in a unique situation in that much of the Region is remains relatively free of invasive species. However, the threat of the impacts of invasive species in Alaska is urgent and a high priority for all the Service programs here. Our cross-programmatic efforts are increasing each year as we collaborate with other Federal, State, Tribal, and non-governmental agencies to eradicate and contain species like Elodea, Northern Pike, Rats, and Orange Hawkweed, while initiating efforts to prevent the introduction of new species (e.g., quagga or zebra mussels) to the Region. To help us reach our goals, the Region is hiring two full time biologist at the GS-11/12 grade that will be focused on prevention, early detection and rapid response efforts throughout the Region. The two individuals will report to the Regional Office with possible duty stations in Anchorage, Fairbanks, or on the Kenai Peninsula (i.e., Soldotna or Homer) to help with our localized efforts in those areas.

As the Service and DOI shifts to doing national batch hiring, we were anticipating a more general job announcement for these Fish and Wildlife Biologist positions. The position description (and some of the application questions) for this announcement ended up being more specific to staff focused on endangered species efforts. However, many of the knowledge, skills and abilities are similar to what we are looking for such as:

  *   Conduct on-site ecological investigations;
  *   Conduct specie status surveys;
  *   Ensuring project compliance with governing regulations such as National Environmental Policy Act;
  *   Assess, select, and make optimum use of data, methods, field observations and other information to draw sound conclusions which result in effective recommended action plans;
  * Participate in multi-disciplinary planning efforts with a variety of public and private groups, state, local, or Federal agencies; and,
  * Prepare responses to inquiries from Congressional staff, the public, the news media, etc..
Please note this is being flown as a merit promotion and the announcement closes on October 29, 2019.

Interested individuals with questions about the positions should call me on my cell phone, 907-378-0568.

Thanks for the help distributing this.

Aaron and the rest of the Alaska Regional Invasive Species Team.
