POSITION TYPE/HOURS:  full time/40 hours

POSITION SUMMARY

The Great Lakes Stream Restoration Specialist will report directly to the Great Lakes Habitat Program Manager and will be responsible for survey and design of aquatic habitat restoration projects. Project duties also require permitting assistance and construction oversight. Projects will occur on and adjacent to National Forest Systems lands and will provide multiple benefits including flood resiliency, improvement of aquatic habitat and water quality, and protection of aquatic health and biodiversity. The position will be based in northeast Wisconsin or northern Michigan.



DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

·         Conduct stream geomorphic surveys (dimension, pattern, profile, substrate), and stream habitat assessments, as well as aquatic passage assessments.

·         Perform channel and topographic surveys using survey equipment to aid in restoration design.

·         Develop hydrologic and hydraulic models for basis of design.

·         Develop basemaps and design plans in AutoCAD or similar design software.

·         Prepare design plans, cost estimates, and specifications for aquatic habitat restoration projects.

·         Assist with permitting and collection of pre-and post-construction data for monitoring of projects.

·         Provide construction oversight for project implementation.

·         Implement multiple restoration projects simultaneously on and adjacent to Great Lakes National Forests.

·         Assist in grant writing and reporting.

·         This position is a non-supervisory position.

QUALIFICATIONS

·         A P.E. or M.S. in geomorphology or biological systems engineering is preferred. A B.S. in watershed management, geomorphology, or biological systems engineering with applied experience is required.

·         Experience with developing and applying hydrologic and hydraulic computer models.

·         Expertise in natural stream design techniques, project permitting, and supervision of multiphase stream restoration projects.

·         Experience in construction document development using computer aided design software such as AutoCAD Civil3D.

·         Experience with ESRI GIS software and/or Rivermorph are preferred.

·         A working knowledge of principles and practices of fisheries and aquatic resource management with an emphasis on stream habitat requirements of brook trout.

·         Ability to work with a diverse group of stakeholders including federal and state agencies, farmers, biologists, engineers, and other landowners.

·         Strong organizational skills with exceptional attention to detail.

·         Self-motivated and highly energetic, with excellent time-management skills and ability to manage multiple deadlines simultaneously.

·         Ability and willingness to travel.  Valid driver’s license required.

·         Passion for protecting and restoring trout populations and their watersheds.
