 Position: Program Coordinator for Invasive Species Program

This position serves as the Invasive Species Program Coordinator for the Muskegon River Watershed Assembly. The position is responsible for outreach to lakeshore owners and Lake Boards about the MiCorps Cooperative Lakes Management Program Exotic Aquatic Plant Watch (CLMP-EAPW) and completing aquatic invasive species monitoring in up to 3 lakes.

Major duties include, but are not limited to, the following: Recruitment of lakeshore owners to monitor lakes for key aquatic invasive species (AIS); maintaining communication with citizen monitors; Development of a contact list for 100-150 lake boards and representatives; Organizing and hosting five lake monitoring recruitment events; Assisting in lake monitoring for invasive species and water chemistry in up to three area lakes; and Summarizing data and report writing.

Most activities will occur in Mecosta County of the Muskegon River watershed and will be coordinated with the North Country Cooperative Invasive Species Management Area (https://www.northcountryinvasives.org/). Extensive driving will be required to meet with lakeshore owners or Lake Boards. Some lake monitoring will occur in Newaygo County during a one to two week period. This position will be in an office setting or meeting with landowners for approximately 80% of time with fieldwork 20% or less.

Minimum Qualifications and Requirements: Associates degree in Biology or currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Biology or similar; Ability to attend and complete Boater Safety course; Experience in lake sampling for aquatic invasive species and water quality; Ability to identify aquatic vegetation in field and laboratory; Experience interacting with the public in natural resource issues; Experience in operating a boat and proficient at swimming; Good interpersonal and communication skills with emphasis on solid phone skills; Ability to attend and complete Boater Safety course; and Valid driver’s license for travel.

 Physical Demands and Working Environment: Mild physical labor is to be expected during lake sampling including launching and loading of boats, and lifting of sampling equipment.

Pay: $15-17
