M.S. Assistantship: Conservation Genomics of Flatwoods Salamanders

A Masters assistantship is available in the Department of Biology at Georgia Southern University (GSU), with an intended start date in August 2019. In collaboration with biologists and scientists from the Longleaf Alliance, Virginia Tech, and various state and federal agencies, the student will be expected to play a pivotal role and develop a thesis project on the conservation genomics of endangered Reticulated flatwoods salamanders (Ambystoma bishopi). Briefly, the project will involve the use of reduced-representation sequencing (e.g., ddRADSeq) to characterize the genomic resources of local breeding populations, infer population viability and demography, and inform management projects aimed at habitat and population restoration. This is primarily a lab-based project, though the incumbent will be expected to assist with a variety of field and lab activities with other members of the Roberts lab (https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__www.southernfisheries.org&d=DwIBaQ&c=nE__W8dFE-shTxStwXtp0A&r=Znw7vQJ85zwmeBWJKUyE3A&m=b3IASWzyq37eLyEIVL-0g2meMfBEhf9V8X5PjsQg100&s=Z7zzbCFciqnqu5dwUDBpbQ72EcoE0tiV-PY01AaD8L4&e=).

The successful applicant will become enrolled in the Master’s of Biology program at GSU (Statesboro campus) and complete course work and an M.S. thesis, leading to an M.S. degree in Biology. The research assistantship includes a tuition waiver and stipend for two years. More information about the graduate program can be found at the Biology department’s web page (https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__cosm.georgiasouthern.edu_biology_graduate-2Dprogram-2D2_&d=DwIBaQ&c=nE__W8dFE-shTxStwXtp0A&r=Znw7vQJ85zwmeBWJKUyE3A&m=b3IASWzyq37eLyEIVL-0g2meMfBEhf9V8X5PjsQg100&s=NwTp40rfsdMAReZCN-t9qwO4rmPhBTWsX4CC9UAGAvI&e=). GSU is a 28,000-student comprehensive research university located in one of the most biodiverse regions of the southeastern U.S. (https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__www.georgiasouthern.edu_&d=DwIBaQ&c=nE__W8dFE-shTxStwXtp0A&r=Znw7vQJ85zwmeBWJKUyE3A&m=b3IASWzyq37eLyEIVL-0g2meMfBEhf9V8X5PjsQg100&s=UuH9YdKSqoqn4aosvgxhp8KVAJ-Au4WE22LnncQcXn4&e=).

Required qualifications include (1) a B.S. degree in Biology, Zoology, Ecology and Evolution, Genetics, or a related field, (2) excellent interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills, (3) previous molecular laboratory research experience, and (4) strong self-motivation and ability to work well independently and with a team. Preferred qualifications include (1) strong analytical skills, including statistics and bioinformatics, and (2) demonstrated scientific writing ability, such as authorship of a scientific publication, report, or senior thesis. Additional information about admission requirements can be found on the Biology department’s web page.

To apply, email the following as a single pdf file: (1) statement of research background and interests, (2) curriculum vitae, (3) names and contact information for three academic or professional references, (4) GRE scores, and (5) an unofficial copy of your college transcript.
