Employment Dates:

Some flexibility within April 1, 2018 – September 30, 2019.  The position is for up to 719 hours within this date window.  State holidays (May 28, July 4, and September 3) will be days off without pay.

Work Hours    7:00 am – 3:30 pm  Monday - Friday



Pay Rate: $16.73 per hour



Brief Job Description

Assist with maintaining State Game Areas in Eaton, Barry and Kalamazoo counties. Employee will be responsible for maintaining and running farm tractors, no-till planting equipment, herbicide sprayers, rotary mowers, chain saws, bulldozers and skid loaders. Tasks will include planting food plots, tree planting, native grass planting, dropping trees, applying herbicide to invasive species, state game area maintenance, gate repairs and building maintenance.  Employee will assist with goose and duck banding signing boundaries, trash pickup, trail grading and various habitat projects.  Pesticide certification and Commercial Driver’s License are desired, but not required.

Selection Criteria:

                Required

·         Education:    No specific amount or type.

·         Experience:  No specific amount or type is required.

·         Possess a valid driver’s license.

  *   Employee will be required to get and maintain a medical examiner’s certification (health card) as an employee that will operate a vehicle with a Gross Vehicle Weight rating (GVWr) of 10,001 pounds or more, or a combination vehicle with a Gross Combination weight rating (GCWr) of 10,001 pounds or more.  The cost of the medical examination will be covered by the State of Michigan.



Desired

  *   Education: Possess a high school diploma or GED certificate
  *   Possession of or working towards a degree in Wildlife Management, Wildlife Biologist, or a related field.
  *   Flexibility to work various hours and dates, up to 40 hours per week, including some weekends.
  *   Ability to work independently.
  *   Ability to communicate well with co-workers and the public
  *   Knowledge and experience using hand and power tools.
  *   Knowledge or experience relating to wildlife or DNR programs.
  *   Knowledge and experience operating agriculture and construction equipment.
  *   Ability to accurately read a map

  *   General office work, including basic computer knowledge, photocopying, answering telephones, etc.
  *   Will be assigned duties that require the application of pesticides certification or registration as a pesticide applicator in compliance with the Pesticide Control Act of 1976 is desired.
  *   May have the opportunity for tasks that require possession of the Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) issued by the Secretary of State as required by Public Act 346 of 1988 to operate a designated state vehicle, CDL is desired.





Screening Criteria:

·                     Possess a high school diploma or GED certificate.

·                     Possess a valid driver’s License.

·                     Experience interacting with customers or the public.

·                     Experience operating tractors and farm implements

·                     Possession of or working towards a degree in Wildlife Management, Wildlife Biologist, or a related field.

·                     Desire to work in a natural resources related career.

·                     Experience working for any natural resources related agency.

·                     Experience using computers.

·                     Pesticide Certification or CDL.
