Seasonal Fisheries Positions


Positions: Short-term State Workers (Fisheries) located at the Charlevoix Fisheries Research Station; 96 Grant St., Charlevoix, Michigan  49720 and on the Research Vessel Steelhead.

Wage: State worker hourly pay rates are $10.19 for first-time workers or those with less than 400 hours of previous MDNR experience; $10.92 with 400+ hours of MDNR experience in 2018, and $11.64 with 400+ hours of MDNR experience in each of 2017 and 2018.


Duration: Eighteen weeks (719 hours). Starting date is flexible between March and early May. There is also a possible extension for a total term of 1040 hours.

Duties: Perform field and laboratory sampling and analysis for studies of walleye, northern pike, smallmouth bass, muskellunge, lake trout, and whitefish.  Learn laboratory skills involving image analysis, fish aging, and data management and summary skills.  Assist with other Station and Management Unit activities such as trawling, walleye ponds, stream electrofishing, lake surveys and SCUBA diving (for those certified). Workers will gain experience relevant to MDNR fisheries technician and fisheries biologist positions. Work time will be split approximately 50:50 between lab and field work.  Some traveling to field sites will be required. Qualifications: Applicants should be self-starting, highly-motivated individuals interested in performing fisheries-related fieldwork that often involves strenuous physical labor. Preference will be given to applicants with knowledge of standard software such as Microsoft Excel, Access, and Word, and field experience. Academic coursework, work experience, and other skills are also considered. Civil Service rules require all State Workers to submit to and pass a pre-employment drug test.

Housing:  Shared housing may be available in Charlevoix.
