The Ingham County Health Department AmeriCorps State Program is looking to hire one individual as our Garden Support Specialist with the Greater Lansing Food Bank! Member will serve March 1st, 2019 – September 25th, 2019 and be a vital part of the urban gardening scene in Greater Lansing.
 
Commonly known as the “Domestic Peace Corps,” AmeriCorps is a national service program that offers paid positions with significant professional development opportunities to individuals of all ages looking to make a difference in our community. They spend their days face-to-face with community members and volunteers. The Power of We Consortium focuses on two goals to Ingham County Residents:
1)            Increase consumption of healthy foods and reduce food insecurity with gardening, food distribution and referrals.
2)            Teach community members the importance of eating healthy food strategies to adopt better diets.      
 
Our Garden Support Specialist will provide hands-on garden support to a network of Garden Project (GP) community gardens across Ingham County. Member responsibilities will include tilling, mowing, infrastructure repairs and providing basic community garden site maintenance, all in efforts to support the GP’s yearlong push for garden sustainability. Members will also lead volunteer groups and foster on-site community leadership to create more inclusive growing spaces. Members will model direct service as they serve alongside Garden Project staff across many types of gardens across the county and have a willing and interest in working with all types of people while modeling patience, kindness, flexibility, respect and maintain privacy to those we are assisting in the community.
 
Preferred Skills:
The ability and willingness to work outdoors in all weather conditions. Some evenings and weekends required.
Excellent communication skills, flexibility, well organized, with the ability to finish projects started.
Completely trustworthy with the ability to serve independently with adequate guidance.
Some experience in gardening, farming &/or landscaping and an enjoyment of physical labor. General or technical knowledge of gardening or urban agriculture a plus
Computer proficiency, specifically Microsoft Office Suite.
Flexible nature and well organized/efficient with time and schedule.
 
Compensation:
Members will receive a living allowance of $6,400 distributed bi-weekly from March 1st, 2019 -September 25, 2019 and receive student loan forbearance for qualified loans. Professional development training, health, dental & vision coverage and childcare available to eligible members. Upon successful completion of service an education award in the amount of $2,960 will be issued. Members will serve 33-36 hours/week.
