The University of Texas-Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) is seeking applications for a two tenure-track Assistant Professor faculty positions within the College of Sciences, with
dual appointments in the School
of Earth, Environmental and Marine Sciences (SEEMS) and the Department
of Biology. These are full-time, tenure-track positions involving teaching, scholarly research, and service, and complement recent hires to form a core group at UTRGV of faculty in Agriculture and Food
Systems Sciences.
We encourage any applicants with a Ph.D. in any discipline relevant to agricultural or food sciences with a focus in either (a) plant pathology or (b) integrated
pest management. Qualified candidates should be able to teach and create a variety of courses in their field of expertise. The successful candidate is expected to collaborate on scholarship and research with other faculty and other related programs that leverage
the unique subtropical agricultural landscape of the Rio Grande Valley, existing connections to the USDA Agricultural Research Service and USDA APHIS, USFWS, committed grower cooperators, and the burgeoning regional expertise and interest in sustainable agriculture
and food systems.
UTRGV is located in a region of unusual biological diversity and interest, the subtropical Rio Grande Valley, near the Gulf of Mexico. South Texas is also considered an
agricultural hotspot, located on the US-Mexico Border and home to the largest agricultural land ports in the country. The subtropical climate allows for year round growing, and as a result south Texas is among the state-wide leader in the production of citrus,
potatoes, sorghum, sugar cane, melons, cotton, vegetables, and other specialty crops. Already considered one of the premier Hispanic Serving Institutions in the US, UTRGV is developing initiatives to become the premier research institution in South Texas.
The College of Sciences recently inaugurated a new $87M Science Building, which includes state-of-the-art lab spaces and a core facility for instrumentation. The university offers a start-up package and reduced teaching load for incoming faculty. Highly qualified
candidates may also be eligible for the University of Texas System Rising Star Award to enhance start-up packages.
UTRGV is a Hispanic-serving Institution dedicated to student success and building a diverse faculty committed to working in a multicultural environment. UTRGV has an NSF
ADVANCE grant to increase the representation of women in STEM fields and to promote a positive, family friendly workplace for all faculty. We strongly encourage applications from women and minorities.
We are looking to begin review of applications at the end of January 2019. If you have any questions about the position, or about any related programs at UTRGV, please
