*WORKSHOP*

*“I**NNOVATION, ENTREPRENEURSHIP AND KNOWLEDGE FLOWS IN AND OUT OF **E*
*MERGING**E**CONOMIES**”*

June 28, 2019

Copenhagen Business School

Department of International Economics, Government and Business (EGB)

*Background and Research Topics *

Emerging markets have engaged in the process of technological upgrading for
economic development. Businesses, both state-owned and private, are moving
either upstream or downstream to capture more of the value added.
Entrepreneurs are using both market voids and arbitrage opportunities to
leverage their skills and capture new markets. Emerging markets firms and
entrepreneurs are among the most dynamic adjusting to fast moving markets
at home and increasingly changing environment abroad.

Technological, industrial, and organizational processes are changing the
global value chains (GVC) of various industries and newcomers from emerging
markets are challenging the status quo and incumbents in the developed
world. The flows of money, people, capital and products are changing with
the rise of emerging markets. Innovation that takes place in emerging
economies may be present through different forms of ‘hidden innovation’
like improvements in production capability, upgrading through engineering,
new forms of software support or new business models. Emerging markets
multinationals are especially vexing when it comes to value creation. Our
understanding of the antecedents, processes and outcomes of such changes is
still incomplete and the impetus for this post-AIB workshop in the
Copenhagen Business School.

The aim of this one-day- workshop is to generate new theoretical, empirical
and policy insights on this topic on both the large emerging markets, such
as BRICS, as well as lesser researched regions, such as Latin America,
Russia and South East and Central Asia. We invite submissions from
different disciplinary perspectives addressing, but not limited to, the
following topics:

*International business perspective*

· R&D and innovation by foreign multinational enterprises in emerging
markets

· Innovation and knowledge-seeking by emerging markets multinationals

· Internationalization and modes of entry of R&D

*Entrepreneurship perspective*

· International entrepreneurship from emerging markets

· Venture capital and start-ups in emerging markets

· Risk perceptions and opportunity recognition

*Science, technology and innovation perspective:*

· Development and adoption of digital technologies (e.g. artificial
intelligence, renewables, robotics, e-mobility, etc.) by emerging market
firms

· University-industry interaction in innovation

· Innovation policy in emerging markets

· Novel indicators and measures of technological progress applied to
emerging markets

*Global value chain perspective*

· Product, process and functional upgrading of emerging market
suppliers in GVCs

· Innovation and emerging market firms as lead firms in GVCs

· Digitisation and GVC reconfiguration
